We actually did this in a real studio, Goldentone here in Gainesville. I can't believe we actually have a BACKER who is PAYING for this! He wants to do a video too, haha!
Anyhow, big news, we now have a rough mix for the Crash Pad song "Pink Slip Rick." It was gonna have slide and harp in the blank verse but we ended up doing a lead guitar instead. Which presented a bit of a problem, as I'd never even attempted to play lead on the song. Or even thought about it. We kept the third take, all of them totally improvised. No punch-ins. Ain't perfect but it works.
Pink Slip Rick kind of evolved. Thought it might need to be "sweetened" for mainstream consumption (thus I also did acoustic parts, on mando and 12-string, not used) and I even did a couple takes of singing like a regular human being, but Tim, our patron, wanted to just do the regular live-type punk rock vocal, so that's what's down. I didn't do a single punch-in (instruments or vocals) last night! Two takes, pick one, haha!
Listen, if you dare, and lemme know the true depth of its awfulness!

I like the actual old-school punk thing you're doing. Cool sound on the solo, too!
I was going to embed the player in my post but apparently the forum doesn't like Myspace.

I thought it was a cool tune... Nice pop-punk feel, fun, and I think capturing the first or second take, with no punch-ins, gives me the feeling like you're right there, singing and playing...

Thanks Mark. The solo (as well as one of the rhythm tracks) was my LP Classic through my li'l Super Champ XD! Damn I love that thing. I freaking LIVE on the Vox setting (Voice #7). I had originally planned on using my live show head, the Sovtek, but when we did the base tracks the Sunn head I'd brought for my rhythm guitarist ended up getting used for bass (it is, in fact a bass head, though I use it for both) because the engineer did not wnat to only go direct (the bass is a mix of live and DI), so I let the rhythm guitarist use the Sovtek, and I used the SC XD, which I'd actually brought as a spare catch-all. So the other rhythm track (barre chords to my cowboy chords) is a Gibby SG to the Sovtek into a 2x12 Celestion DIY cab.
I can't believe our backer has sunk like 5 Benjamins into this! We have another 3 songs that are about 3/4 to 80% done, mainly need vocals, with a few extra instruments. Back in the studio next Wednesday!

Funny thing is, this guy is painfully straight, actually a law enforcement officer! Not at all what you'd think of as a rock impressario or artsy patron type. But he's just as pissed off about the current Florida political sitch as I am! I somehow find that comforting. Not to mention finally getting some of this "to tape" as we usedta say back in the day.
I'm feelin' all rock starry, haha!

I think people are unhappy all over. It's nice to get your thoughts out there musically and that folks agree with you.

I actually consciously avoided doing this for years. A couple years ago I finally snapped (haha) and wrote "Labor Day" which we (actually my drummer did the drums, and I did everything else on that'un, as it was during a Crash Pad hiatus) recorded for a homeless outreach benefit CD. That and this song are our most overtly political, and even this one doesn't directly mention any particular political figure in its actual lyric. I don't want us easily pigeonholed as one of those strictly political punk bands (the English band Crass immediately comes to mind), as that can get old real fast.
The other 3 songs awaiting completion are:
Make Haste Slowly: about keeping perspective in life
Stevo: about the loss of a friend (specifically, a drummer from one of my first bands who died in a plane crash)
Yesterday's Predictions: a relationship/breakup song
