Hey Mark :) Your lessons are amazing man. Extremely well written and presented. Thank you so so much!!.
I got a question. Is there a Major blues scale and a minor blues scale? And all the blues scale is just adding in the 4th note right?
Thanks

Thanks Tim!

I guess the way to look at it is that you have a Minor Pentatonic scale with 5 notes:

Root, Minor 3rd, Perfect 4th, Perfect 5th and Minor 7th

Your Blues Scale adds the "diminished" or b5 to that collection of notes:

Root, Minor 3rd, Perfect 4th, Diminished 5th, Perfect 5th and Minor 7th

Both scales are minor

Just for comparison a "Natural Minor" or Aeolian Mode (they are the same thing) adds two notes to the Minor pentatonic:

Root, Major 2nd Minor 3rd, Perfect 4th, Perfect 5th, Minor 6th and Minor 7th

Your Major Pentatonic scale has these five notes:

Root, Major 2nd, Major 3rd, Perfect 5th and Major 6th

It is derived from removing the 4th and 7th notes from a Major scale

Root, Major 2nd, Major 3rd, Perfect 4th Perfect 5th, Major 6th and Major 7th

If you are playing over a Dominant 7th chord (like an "A7" chord) you can get away with playing Minor Pentatonic, Blues scale and the Mixloydian Mode...it is like your major scale but we lower the 7th note to a minor 7th:

Root, Major 2nd, Major 3rd, Perfect 4th, Perfect 5th, Major 6th and Minor 7th

Does this help any? Let me know if you need more clarification...its kind of wordy ;D

HI :o

Ok I think I get it. Is Dominant another way to say Major ??? Like when you said Dominant 7th Chord like A7
Does that mean Major 7th ???
I get that both Blues and Minor Pentatonic are minor now Does Mixloydian Mode mean just taking the Major scale and adding a Minor 7th at the end instead of a Major Seventh.
Slowly starting to learn this. I learned the 5 positions of the pentatonic by heart, and I have allot of fun with that. Im just trying to understand why everything is the way it is.
Thanks

Major 7th and Dominant 7th chords are different.

If a chord says "Amaj7" then it has a root, major 3rd, perfect 5th and major 7th...A, C#, E and G# in the key of A

If the chord ust says "A&" then it has a Root, Major 3rd, Perfect 5th and Minor 7th...A, C#, E, G

The chords will have totally different sounds and functions in diatonic harmony. If you are playing over one of these chords then you want to make sure that you know which one it is and play the correct scale...we can do substitutions and things later but in the beginning its better just to play simply....
