I want to do a live recording that would capture the audience singing along. I can hook my digital recorder to my sound board, but am not sure how to record the audience parts. Would I mic the audience and run it through the sound board as well? Any thoughts?

if you have a second recording device, you could always use that one on the audience and eyeball the two together in whatever software you use later.

How many tracks is your digital recorder? If it's stereo, you can take set up a stereo microphone or two microphones (could be X-Y, Blumlein, ORTF, space pair, whatever, depending on what you have, your preference, and your expertise) and run that into the board, obviously not pumping it out the mains. Then you could blend that as you please into the stereo setup.

Far more flexible would be if you have a multiltrack recorder, in which case you would use two tracks on the audience as above and mix it in later, also mixing in the different elements of the band in and creating a nice recording.

Or you could do it as suggested above. I've never done that, but theoretically it should work if you can line up everything perfectly.
