View Full Version : What happened to me?

Six months ago my pedalboard consisted of a wah, a delay, and an EQ.
This is the board I'm using at my gig tonight.
http://www.thewindtunnel.com/GuitarPics/Pedalboard03.07.09.jpg
I was mounting the Turbo Tuner this morning and decided to go ahead and put the Bad Monkey on there too. My plan is to use the BM on the bluesier numbers and the Barber for my higher gain stuff. That setup works great.
As a semi-unexpected consequence, with both ODs on, the OD tone is just fantastic. Harmonics just leap off the fretboard.
I think I'm ill. :o

I'm a bad influence. You'll need professional help when you get to this:

Pedals are good :D That reminds me, I need to swap my board around for tonight

You do realize that you only have 2 more pedals on your board than I have on mine...3 if you count the tuner.

I'm also taking a 50 watt half stack to a dinky little hole in the wall bar.

Mark, did you buy yours from somewherE?

Actually I've seen much worse. I've also taken my wah pedal and Boss octave pedal off recently.

Mine was built by Tourmaster cases in Anaheim. I'm not sure if they are still around or not....

I'm uploading a clip of me going through all the pedals on the board that ends with every pedal on the board going (except the tuner, which mutes the output).
It's the rig I'll be using tonight.
Les Paul Standard into that conglomeration of pedals into the Bassman into the Peavey 412 cab with the Greenback mic'd. I think I'll probably set up the amp as a side fill so the mic'd sound will be predominant to the people out front. Those other 3 speakers in the cab (Celestion G12K85) are pretty bright and I don't want to cut the audience's heads off. The band, I don't care so much about. :D

If you're taking a half stack, I cant imagine what the gear whore in the band is bringing. :o

I really wish I could figure out my uploading glitch. There are hiccups in here that are pretty loud, so don't turn your speakers or headphones way up. Other than the hiccups, the sound quality is alright though.
So, this is about 2 minutes and 39 seconds of hiccupy wanking.
The Hardwire Reverb remains on through the whole clip.
0:00-0:22 - Clean. Just the reverb pedal.
0:22-0:45 - Bad Monkey0:45-1:08 - Barber DD SS
1:08-1:31 - Bad Monkey, Barber
1:31-2:00 - Bad Monkey, Barber, Digitech Digidelay
2:00-2:05 - Bad Monkey, Barber, Digitech Digidelay, MXR EQ (mid boosted by a DB or 2)
2:05-2:19 - Bad Monkey, Barber, Digitech Digidelay, MXR EQ, Original Crybaby
2:19-2:30 - Bad Monkey, Barber, Digitech Digidelay, MXR EQ, EVH Phase 90
2:30-2:39 - Bad Monkey, Barber, Digitech Digidelay, MXR EQ, EVH Phase 90, Original Crybaby
Like I said, 2:39 of pure wank. :o
Pedalboard Wanking (http://www.thewindtunnel.com/Clips/Pedalboard.mp3)
Now that I listen to it, I think I have the Phase 90 times a little off. If you hear a phase, it the EVH phase 90. :o

Different band.
This is the 'sensible' band that only plays gigs and hasn't practiced in 10 years.
The gear whore band is playing tonight too, but they replaced me with a keyboard player for tonight's gig.
I think it's the first time in 5 years that both bands have had gigs scheduled on the same night. :o

Sounds good...How are you liking the dirt from the pedals vs the dirt from the C30 drive channel?

It's a little bit different kind of dirt. The pedals seem to be more articulate, almost cleaner dirt, even when using more gain. There's just more articulation with the pedals.
It's not really a fair compaison though, since I've been using the pedals with a Bassman head and 412 cab, and I'm so used to the C30's tone through just the amp's speaker and a 112 extension cab. The 1/2 stack definitely has more kick.
I still like both. I'm not ready to completely abandon one for the other though.

After doing a gig with this setup, I like the tones, but I've got to go back in and put some braces inside the board. It has too much flex in the top, and makes turning the pedals in the middle of the board on and off a bit of a hassle. We struggled with it a little bit at the gig, especially the Bad Monkey. There was quite a bit of flex in the top.

Did you record the gig?

Did you record the gig?
No. Since we hadn't played there for years, and were using a house PA, I didn't feel like loading up the recording gear and going through that hassle. I thought about taking my MD recorder and a couple of condensor mics and just dropping a couple of room mics and recording straight to minidisc, but even that seemed like too much work. I didn't take a video camera either.
We did take a camera, but since Mrs. P slept in the van through all but the last 15 minutes of the gig, we didn't get many pics. I'm pretty sure there are a few pics from the very end of the gig, but I haven't looked at the camera yet to see if any of them came out.
Plus, with my cold, my voice wasn't anywhere near 100% for the show, and while I made it through the first 2 sets alright, by the last set I didn't have anything left at all.

Okay, based on my past experiences with my pedalboard, combined with the experience from this weekend, I've decided to forego the fancy 'hiding the wires' thing I've been doing. I also know that I liked how my first pedalboard had the back row raised above the front row so switching was easier.
So, I redid my board (again). This time, the wires aren't hidden, but the back row is elevated and the board is much more flexible in terms of being able to put pedals where I want them. I could even add another pedal or two if I wanted. :o
I used a 1x12x24" piece of poplar for the bottom part, and glued/screwed a 1x6 piece on top for the elevated shelf. The elevated portion is 18" long and the bottom portion, after trimming is 23" long, and the board is 12" wide.
I think this will work much better in a gig situation, even though the wiring isn't hidden. Truth be told, those big honkin' holes all over the other board didn't look so clean anyway.

Same routing as before:
Wah -> Turbo Tuner -> EVH Phaser -> Bad Monkey -> Direct Drive -> Digidelay -> Hardwire Reverb -> MXR EQ.

I use it as a lead boost, so every song that I take a lead in, I use the EQ...thus why it's so easy to get to.

Try putting the phaze between the direct drive and the digidelay. It would be better to process your distortion rather than distort your processing.:aok:

I know conventional wisdom says to put time based effects after gain based effects, but having tried the phaser both before and after, it sounds a lot better before the gain.

I love using an EQ as a lead boost. As you can see from the position of the sliders, it doesn't take much to push the leads to the top of the mix. Just a few DB of mid range and the leads pop, and it doesn't add any gain. Depending on how you set the EQ, you can just make your signal louder, or you can change the EQ curve slightly to make the tone cut better. I find it a lot more effective than most other boosts on the markets.

I've been using an Xotic RC booster and adding a small amoung of gain and a little Bass. The big thing for me is that the RC Booster is incredibly transparent if you want it to be. I'd be curious to try and EQ pedal and see how I dig it, though...This is what it sound slike on my rig, although the amp volume is a little low to get a great sound:
