KVR Audio (http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php) - A great resource for free (and commercial, for that matter) VST plugins.

An indispensable plugin, and the only reverb plugin you'll ever need imo.
And it's free love0

Just scour the web for impulse responses to use with it :-)

I was just starting to mess with it when I got a lead on another one that isnt exactly free but I found MUCH easier to use.

It took me a couple hours, but I got the hang of the free one....my song needs only vocals now...gotta finish writing the lyrics....

No need for vocals if you don't want 'em. Me, I want 'em.

Not so much I dont want 'em, more I cant sing and even if I could dont really have the recording equipment to lay them down. So I just tend to write my stuff without them.

For the Open-source crowd, Ardour (http://ardour.org).

Works with Mac and Linux. Takes a bit of setup, though, so I wouldn't reccomend it if you aren't a supernerd like myself.

This version of Guitar Rig is free, fwiw, the supplied "Marshall Jump" model is probably the one I use the most in the full version..loads of tones to be had here:

The free version of Addictive Drums..my favourite drum software by far..
