My Seagull hasn't been seeing much action these days and it's probably going to be my grab & go acoustic for occasional jamming with friends...I figured that it would be the perfect candidate for a set of coated strings. The DRs were priced right so I threw a pack of mediums into my recent string order.
Here's DR's blurb on the coating
The K3™ coating is the first coating that players report, “sounds as good or better than uncoated strings.” DR’s new, remarkable, proprietary and patent pending K3™ Technology Coating is the first coating that makes no apologies and no excuses for not delivering sound equal to uncoated strings. Players tell us that these strings have more volume, less unwanted overtones, greater clarity and articulation then standard, uncoated strings. Yet, they provide the same protection due to corrosion and perspiration as well as increased tone life that coated strings are known for.
These are replacing a set of Ernie Ball Regular Slinky Phosphor Bronze strings.
My initial feedback: They sound nice and bright (but definitely not harsh)...very clear. Focused mid-treble response with less bass than most of the uncoated phosphor bronze strings I've had on this guitar. With this emphasis on the mids-upper mids-treble, the guitar sounds a bit louder and projects nicely. I perceive a little more pick scrape on the wound strings than I remember on the EBs. The one weird thing is that the B string feels "lumpy" like it's unevenly coated. It doesn't seem to effect and tone and I don't really notice it fretting but only when I'm finger picking that string. Overall, I like the way they sound out of the package; a little more bass would be nice for solo playing but the tone with these will be perfect with other guitars/instruments.
