Laid Back E Lydian Jam!

Not a mode I play in very often, I'm more of a minor guy :o..but this was fun. The Backing Track is here:

For any of you who don't know what the Lydian mode is, there's tons of info on the internet and some of it is even right. ;)..in essence it's the 4th mode of the Major scale, and as this is in E Lydian, you want to play the notes of the B Major scale, which has the same notes as E Lydian over the jam track to get the distinct Lydian tonality...but bear in mind that your root note is E..NOT B...if you emphasise the E, G# and A# notes over the track you'll get a good idea of what the Lydian mode sounds like...sounds kind of dreamy to me..

Actually on a serious note for anyone else, playing to a modal vamp like this on a single string is really good practice. Remember you're playing the B Major scale notes here..and you have the open B string to play with :)...try bending, hammering/pulling and sliding around on that B string only for some cool Jeff Beck type phrases...

Thanks Randy! :D..yeah, it's funny..I used my Charvel for this and I was riding the Floyd Rose pretty much the whole take..the track and lydian mode vibe just lends itself to that type of playing..especially in this sort of context.

Oh, this is a really easy and useful "shape" that contains notes from the E lydian mode. Just two frets apart, two fingers, easy to memorise. Experiment with string skips and you get a LOT of music out of this:

Thanks Randy! I'd love to spend some time working on this kind of thing and revist the track but I just don't have the time right now. It was really fun though....

I chose to do a rough draft and this is what I came up in 1.5 Hours. Didn't spend much time on it as I just let the improve flow from the fingers so you get the phopas and unwanted nuances. What you will here is a three part guitar harmony and single part solo in two sections. I used my Les Paul Studio to record with through my Line PodLiveXT. What I am happy is that I got a chance to lay some ideas down so I can go back and relearn, tweak and compose something other than just a pure jam. Well at least some type of composition is there - either way these are always fun to do when I can do them!

Thanks Mobro. I never noticed that my opening phrase was similar, how Ironic. Those were the first notes that came out of my guitar when I started - :lol:. I listened to yours in the morning and heard Mark's before I started mine. I do miss my trem bar though as for me, Lydian screams the need for more whammy bar - :lol: - with my ears. My first run through with the track had me doing a few arps and I even had two hand tapping - which is something I don't much at all anymore - :lol:. Funny though as I immediately heard harmonies again - must be inbred. The are sparks of shredding but that is all they are, just sparks. That's funny that I may have played more notes than you.....lmbo

Well, after listening to your takes, I probably should take up harmonica... Anyways, I haven't unpacked my guitar since I've been home, and haven't played for over a week... I will give it a try later while I'm drinking beer...

However, I got a good chuckle laughing at myself, because for the first time in 30 years, I now "get" what the Lydian scale is, and am able to picture it as the relative major scale of the Dorian... Duh!

It is not so much of the working the harmonies out, it is more if I hear it immediately I will do them. What I hate is fighting to make something work, it should just really flow with no issue. What I like about what you did was that you were seeking musical ideas as brother Mo noted.

Yep... That is part of one of my favorite "boxes"... I hadn't given it much thought until this thread, but I realize I have quite a few licks in the Lydian mode... I just didn't know what mode they were...

Nice groove on this bt- I might give it a shot. haven't contributed anything in a while. I ten d to take the Modern Saint approach in many BT jams- make something really interesting to listen to- put some structure to it somehow. Most likely, it's not going to be anything too shreddy (well, maybe a little:D).
