I'm more of an electric player than acoustic, but I thought I would get an acoustic guitar lesson series going this month while the solo contest is going on...here it is:

Thanks for the lesson Mark. Was able to move along on this one fairly fast. Now for the rest of your acoustic lessons. ::)

;D

I'm not the most prolific acoustic player, so my acoustic lessons are few and far between...

Well Mark I'm on your lesson #2 now. Just posted this to kind of keep record to see how long it will take me to learn it and play it without looking at the sheet music.
Like always, thanks for the lessons you provide :)

Hi Mark
Well I am getting the hang of it but going to the "F" cord is still a challenge. I also finally listened to the whole video and, yeah, you make it look so easy. :-[

You'll get it.....

Have you played many barre chords before?

My problem even after 2 weeks of practicing is the fingerpicking change from the G cord to the F cord. I can't make that change fast enough. I fall behind all the time trying to follow your training video. Maybe in another couple of weeks I'll get it. I am determined to get it ::)

That will happen with time and repetition...

Mark, I just discovered something by accident. I am now using the 3rd and 4th fingers on the G cord instead of the 2nd and 3rd fingers. Is that that how you do it. Seems to be a little easier and I now can switch to that F cords much better. party0

Won't be long before I tackle your 3rd lesson. Totally_jammin_out

As long as you are getting everything in time and sounding clean it should be OK...What strings are you using those fingers on?

I haven't played a G chord the right way for years.

Here's how I do it.

---3--- Pinky
---3--- Ring
---0---
---0---
---2--- Index
---3--- Middle

It's actually harder for me to play it the regular way of:

---3--- Ring
---0---
---0---
---0---
---2--- Index
---3--- Middle

On the low E string (6th I think) the 3rd finger is on the G note and on the B string D note I am using my 4th finger.
My timing has greatly improved but not to where I want to put it on Audacity and show you my progress yet, but I'm getting there cop0 AOK oldi

I knew there was a reason I liked you. cop0

I'm also guilty of doing a C chord like this:

---3---
---3---
---0---
---2---
---3---
---X---

I guess I learned my cowboy chords from Every Rose Has Its Thorn. thwap

biggrin

The only problem with that C is that its a C add9, and not a direct replacement for a regular C Major chord.

I end up using it all the time, too embarrased0

But if you've not studied your theory since you were 18 you wouldn't know that. embarrased0

Mark on this lesson, what do you suggest to your students when they have mucccch difficulty with timing on this picking. I'm not there yet and don't plan on giving up, just not moving fast enough on the timing, what I am trying to say my timing s..... thwap

I would break it down into one beat segments and repeat each segment SLOWLY with the metronome until you have it put together, and then try the next beat. Once you have each beat playable try putting them together two beats at a time until you have the whole pattern!

Hi Mark

Well a year has gone by since I first tried fingerpicking your lesson, I haven't really kept up on it but I'd though I'd post my progress. I put the metronome at 85 bpm but i think I may have lost my timing somewhat, anyway I have noticed if I my wrist (thumb position) in a high position , closer to my chest and let my fingers drop down, maybe that is how classical players may do it, this gives me less tension and helps my timing too. Here is my recording, please give me some feedback. Thanks

It sounds pretty nice....the notes are all clear and fairly even....Less tension is better...

You might get something out of this: http://guitarvlog.blogspot.com/2008/08/right-hand-technique-tone-production-on.html

His writing is a little whacky but there is some good infor for your right hand technique....
