What happened in 1961 that will never happen until 6009?

Here's my big tip... get a physical copy of this and USE IT!
http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Pro-Training-Logic-Express/dp/0321636805/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1305126612&sr=1-1
The tutorials are fantastic and they give you an idea of all the power under the hood, while still letting you skip around and pick what's needed. If you don't need film scoring tutorial skip it! If you need a little extra time with the FlexTime tools you can try it over and over. It teaches you how to quickly read position tags, what you can do within regions and how to use the different function windows. Great book.

Cool! I'll check it out.

Thanks Mark. That's cool!
First question: Why should a developing intermediate player with a couple decent mics (57 and condensor) Toneport interface, and a Mac with Garageband get it instead of stick with garageband? I am thinking for my purposes, GB might do enough. But maybe I am missing something.

If you don't feel like you're missing anything then you probably aren't. If you want to record some bigger projects or do more with software synths and whatnot then thats the time to move up.

Editing is a lot more in-depth.
The sample content is amazing, as are the quality of the plug-ins.
Bus Routing and enhanced automation control.
I think GarageBand really is a great program and you can do serious work in there, but the first time I used Logic it just clicked with me. I found it easy to use AND powerful and my only limits are my own technical (or musical... :o) ones.

Not at this point. Frankly, I end up mic-ing my amp mostly, as then my original signal is generated from my gear, so I learn to use that better. If I start lining in more, and using more of the models, editing, etc. in the computer, then maybe. Right now, it is probably more effective for me to record with what I have and focus on my techniques rather than buy and try to learn a new program. I get what Kerouac is saying, but better bang for the buck for me to stay with what I have. I will follow the thread though out of interest.

to be honest, I hate Garage Band. If someone was asking where to start and they didn't want to go the ProTools route I'd suggest something like Reaper or Cubase.

Hmm. Guess I am just used to it. GUI based, plug and play for the most part. That's how I like it. But at some point, getting to know Logic would be cool. That is why I will follow this thread.

If it's working for you then that's all that is important.

Try to install the full version.
My dumbass installed not only Logic Pro one night, but also Komplete 7. It took about 10 hours.
Oh and I've done it twice.

OK, So this morning I finally get to check it out. Pretty nice. I seem to have all of the funtionality back that I was used to in Cubase that was missing in Garageband. It actually seems nothing at all like garage band to me. Time will tell but I'm sure it will be fine. I probably wont have too much time to play with it until the weekend though.

I cant seem to turn off the monitoring. Whether it's toggled on or off it comes through logic. How do I turn it off? I've even tried selecting no monitoring when adding a track.

What do you mean by no monitoring, exactly? You don't want to hear your input signal?

Is there a way to preset changes in volume in a given track during the song? How about make changes in EQ? Specifically, I'm thinking about a guitar part that would have different volume and EQ for intro/fills/solo/etc and then for behind the vocals. Am I better off just recording two separate tracks?
EDIT - Also, I got the book you mentioned above, but it hasn't helped me much yet. Do I have to read it or something?

I really haven't learned how to use Logic yet but I'm pretty sure there must be a way to automate mix changes like that...

You can record two separate tracks, or you can use automation. Press the "A" key and the automation information for each track will pop up. You can select all of the different parameters for individual plug-ins from there. So in your example:
Put in as many EQ plugs as you need (and remember, you have several different types, not just Channel EQ) and then you can automate the bypass button to kick on or off at the appropriate parts. If you don't want to do it with the automation lane, you can also turn on Latch mode, press play, and then just click the bypass button on the EQ as needed.

Well, not as long as you've got me here. :o
One thing I love about Logic is the automation depth. Nearly every parameter in nearly every Logic plug is able to be automated. I remember being frustrated in Sonar because there would only be two or three options per plug, normally Level and Wet/Dry. I can put on the Logic Tape Delay plug and automate the tape distortion mode for more saturation as the song progresses and it takes all of five minutes.

Yes, I want to hear myself, but blend it in with the interface. Its a lexicon omega.
The automation is awesome btw :thu:

Sorry if I'm still a bit thick... what is it you DON'T want to hear and what is it you do?

In addition to Kerouac's response, there is another way to control automation by setting up a controller knobs and faders in your Preferences/Controller Assignments using the "Learn" mode. Here you can assign midi controllers to allow you to control various effects and envelopes you need to affect. As a tip for you, you can use the wah plug-in with a real time controller to play a wah inside logic!
The difference between the two options is more accuracy with Keroac's method, but also more time consuming, and with this way, it's less accurate, but you can "feel" it out better.
Another way to record is using Capture recording which will allow you to play around with settings in real time, and if you liked what you did, keep the take without officially having to record. This is good for those times you "wished you had hit the record button"...
Hope these suggestions helped!

I don't want to hear the recorded track of what I am recording in real time. I can hear what I am playing via my interface. Don't I just click the "I" to toggle the monitoring on and off? If so, it just keeps on monitoring whether I is on or off. Also there is some sort of auto monitoring, but I haven't found where to turn the auto monitoring off. There are some tracks that I do want to be able to have monitoring and some that I don't.

Controller-based automation is a fantastic way to do it, if you're used to working with MIDI. It's a bit more of a learning curve for the uninitiated though. :o

Click the Mute button on the track you're recording onto.

I've been using Logic for about three years now. I immediately found it very clean and intuitive.
