You know who your are!
Same deal as the other one, but it just has to be something recorded for this particular event...cover song or original...it doesn't matter.
We'll have the reveal on Wednesday, April 1st so just have them in before then!

I'm a mediocre player at best, I SUCK at learning anything by ear, cant solo worth a darn, etc.
I AM gonna try to get something together for this but I only have my guitarport and reaper. My guitarport is pretty capable, but I am still utterly confused by it, and I havent made any progress with reaper.

I just want to have one "fest" for the guys who are just getting started with their recording gear and need a short term goal for their guitar playing. If You and Dexter and Grits all were throwing recordings into the same pool they probably wouldn't feel very comfortable posting their first attempts.
This will actually be my first project all on my own in a very long time with all new gear, but I'll post mine with the big boys :p

An old high school friend of mine has one, and I've probably heard it up around 5 a couple of times. It was deafening.
That said, the JCM 800 I had was the loudest amp I've ever played through. It was literally useless to me because it went from dead quiet to so loud that it blurred your vision and took your breath away from 0 to 1 on the master volume knob. It really didn't get much louder past about 3 or 4, just more 'Marshally'. Unfortunately, by 3 or 4, it was impossible to be in the same room with the amp. I had it for about a year, and it never left my house because if I'd taken it to a gig, we'd have been thrown out by the end of the first song.

Haha, good guess. But no. I wouldnt do Metallica. I actually think I could do that one a lot easier than the one I'm working on, except for the funny timing on the chunking. But it wouldnt be as hard playing-wise.

You know, I never really notice much difference between my uncompressed wave files and my mp3s at 128 kbps. I mean, sometimes the cymbols get a few artifacts, but most of the time, unless I'm really, really listening for it, I don't even notice that.

I think its probably the different speakers more than anything else, then...

Actually, I generally prefer the compressed file. Yes, some quality is lost but I normally hear less hum and unwanted noise in the MP3 than in the master file, so it's not really a bad thing for me.

Depending on how many entries I get, the songwriting contest could take a while. Last year it ran too long, lasting about 2 weeks. This year, I'm going to do my best to only do two rounds and a final. Last year was 4 rounds, a second chance round, and a final, with 3 days between each round.
Still though, if I can finish up my entry, I've still got a few days left to whip something up. I don't think we have any big plans this weekend, so anything's possible.

I will have to have some intense recording this weekend to get finished up. That and an armed guard at the door. My kids never knock or read signs that say 'Do Not Disturb - Recording in progress!!!!', they just barge in or bang on the door anyway...

I got my drums, acoustic guitar and bass tracks recorded tonight. The drums are way too mechanical, but they are loops. I've got to figure out how to use the sequencer in either Ableton or Cubase for drums. I know you have to have a MIDI keyboard for the Cubase one, and I don't have it. The bass lines took way to many attempts to record, and I'm not getting the 'punch in' on my software to work right...
:HB:
I've got three guitar tracks and the vocals to finish by Sunday. And most of the lyrics.
Mark Wein
03-27-2009, 05:52 AM
are you using midi loops or are they wav files? If they are Midi I would think that you could alter them a little bit to fit your song...thats pretty much what I did with mine and it turned out OK...

They are Acid loops from a CD 'drum sampler' I got with Ableton. You can 'play' loops in Ableton. There is also a drum sequencer in both Cubase and Ableton where you can alter a lot of stuff, but I don't have the keyboard for Cubase, and I don't have the time for this song to figure out Ableton.
I did the drum loop in Ableton and Rewired Ableton into Cubase, but I could not figure out from there how to get the loop to play in Cubase in the Rewire channel. So I just saved it as a .wav file and dropped it into Cubase that way. I am slowly figuring this stuff out. I am very at home in a analog studio situation because I did recording and production work for a couple of years, but that was before the digital revolution. I'm loving this, but have a ton of stuff to learn still.

On paper this is pretty easy:
Guitar > NI Rig Kontrol and M*Audio Controller > iMac > Monitors (out through Rig Kontrol)
But I've gotta clean up the space, get all the books, notebooks, backup CDs, etc ready, HD's, clean up extra crap from before the computer was mine and worst of all, learn how to use Logic. :HB:

I have about a 6' x 4' studio space. I have a desk in the corner of the bedroom. I keep wacking the dresser behind me with the chair and/or the guitars. I mike the amp in the closet so the clothing absorbs the volume and I don't get too loud when people are home...

Ditto. This homegrown stuff, especially all you really skilled guys are coming up with, is breathing new life into music for me. Popular stuff nowadays seems like a wasteland.

I agree. This will be the first stuff I've heard here, but I have most of the music forumites at HC have posted on either my computer or my MP3 player. It's really fun to hear what other people are doing.

Hobo Uncle Sam, I noticed you're located in Japan. That makes two of us.
P.S: Mark, I think I'll PM a link to another older song I have. The mix is not very pretty, and the vox are rubbish, but since everyone else is putting up multiple songs, I may as well be a lemming and follow suit.
