Just got back from jogging. I'm up to 65 minutes nonstop now. Any of you folks go jogging?

Actually I do although I am on a slower "Run-walk" program....I think there's a handful of us that are getting back on the bandwagon right now....

I really need to get my butt in gear through the winter and I've really fallen off the exercise wagon for the past 4 years. Used to ride about 1500 miles a year or so. My wife wants to ride the allegheny passage next year on our bikes. Pittsburgh to Washington DC. Something like 330 miles. My butt hurts already. :D *walks out to see if stepper still has crap piled on it* ;D

I've run about three times this week, and I've started walking to and from work. It's about 3.6 miles round trip. When I run, I usually pick a loop and try to run it a little faster than I ran it the last time. My current loop is just about exactly 4 miles, and I started on Tuesday running it in about 45 minutes, and yesterday I ran it in about 35 minutes. So, I'm in pretty bad shape right now. In a couple of weeks, I'd like ot get my time down to about 30 minutes, and then I'll change up the route to something longer. By the end of the year, I'd like to be comfortable running 7-minute miles at the 10k distance. After that, it gets harder for me to shave time.:)

I pounded the pavement this morning at 6:30, and the weather was great for jogging. Currently my right Achilles tendon is highly sore, so I think it's time for a new pair of shoes. Something designed for "Clydesdales" would probably be appropriate. :'(

I tried jogging Sat and Sun a bit, but i have a bit of a problem, my achillies tendon just starts aching right away. I stretched out, i dont know what it is. Im thinking about looking into one of those elliptical machines, maybe i just cant take the pounding anymore.

It bums me out.

Well I only lasted for 30 minutes, but later will go for an hour walk.

It sure was good breaking the bad habit of sitting around and eating them d.... Pringles :)

Actually I'm hoping everyone here gets motivated to walk or light jog by keeping this post alive.

I meant , are you into bicycling. I've been riding a bicycle for over 15 years here and for me it is a lot of fun. I understand cycling now is caught on in the states. On a Sunday I can and do go for a 4 to 6 hour bike ride through the countryside here. Real beautiful and actually here the mountains are more like hills so it isn't to bad, although sometimes I do have to get off the bike.

I have a Chinese made mountain bike that is really good for all terrains. I looked at the Japanese ones but they cost about $600 so I settled for a not so cheap import from China. Cost about $260 bucks. I thought it was a good price. Here there are mini bike paths along all major roads so getting around is easy and fairly safe too.

Where about in Florida are you. I lived in n. Miami beach years ago. Sure miss the weather there, even had a 10 speed bike back then. :)

I didn't run this morning because of some soreness in my right Achilles tendon, but I did make it to the running store and get fitted for a new pair of shoes. At my height and weight, a pair of shoes is supposed to last for about 400 miles. At 4 runs a week, 5 miles a run, that's about 4 months a pair. I'd been going on my last pair for about a year. So, yeah, I was due for new shoes about three times over, and I attribute the pain to that. Here's hoping!

Hey Cheese Grits, glad to hear you are out running. New shoes, yep, I need them too. Just can't seem to afford them. 5 miles runs sound pretty good. I go about 60-65 minutes and call it quites, probably could run farther. Not sure how many miles that is. But maybe around 10-11 kilometers, maybe. I think when you start running it is really hard to quite, like you look for the next day to run again. And for me I'm in my 50's and running is still fun :)

It's nice to see people post on this thread. Keep posting and let us know how you are doing.

You can use google maps to plot a course and determine the length. Click on "get directions", and then change the mode from "driving" to "walking". Then you can set your start point by right clicking on the map and selecting "directions from here". Then you can scroll around the map and set way points by right clicking and selecting either "directions to here" or "add a destination", as appropriate.

If you want to be able to tweak the route easily, I like to set up a single "from here" point which is about a block away from the "to here" point. Then you can click anywhere on the blue route line and drag it around the map. The distance updates itself in real time, which is pretty cool.

Back when I was running I generally bought shoes every nine months and I was running about (thinks back many years....), hmmmm, 30 to 40 miles a week. No wonder I ended up with shin splints...

Its my achillies tendon, it just starts hurting right away, and i stretch out first. I think its done for.

Maybe i'll try to start walking briskly, see how that works. At least i'll be moving.

There a bunch of old cars and trucks like that on my run.....I'll have to take pictures when I see them out...

If I don't do the run-walk thing I end up having lots of problems like that :(

How long do you jog? time wise that is

think I'll have my coffee and plain toast then jam along the river road

About a year and a half ago, I got tired of sitting around being useless and getting fat. I decided to try trail running out. There is a small series that is based around here and I love it. Now when these people talk trails they mean - Trails!! There are times when the trail is so close you can reach out and touch it as it climbs straight up into the sky, but it is very challenging and very pretty. My longest race so far has been the 32 miler in July, but I've been doing halfs and a few triathlons on a pretty regular basis now. I am slow, but I'm getting better and it's quite the adrenaline ruxh to have to push yourself to keep going. I definitely find trails to be more to my liking. The terrain is killer, but the quite and the adventrue is awesome. I have lost a few toenails and gained a few extra bruises and scrapes from it though.

I injured my knee and my calf on Saturday in a ten miler though, so I may be out for a few weeks. major bummer.

Have you tried an xTerra triathlon yet? I'm working to get back in shape pretty much solely for that purpose. A nice trail run at the end of your swimming and biking, when you can't really feel your legs anymore, can be just what the doctor ordered: frightening. ;D

when you click on that, this apears: ([+url][/url]) I had to put the +sign in to get the program to show the tags, it normally isn't there. Just paste the address of the link you want in between the two url tags and that is all you have to do 8)

Well it's 2:25 in the afternoon Sunday and I just got back in from jogging. Went a whole 70 minutes this time. Haven't done that since I've run around them military bases some years ago. ;D

I went for a brisk walk today, my achillies tendon seems to be quite grumpy about any jogging.

But i will say, i did play guitar for probably about twice as long as my walk.

So there. :P

We stay fairly close to each other. We've only done a few races together at this point.

The first one was a month after I ran over my foot with the lawn mower, and it was called 'The Dirty Dog', which meant that your dogs ran with you. It was a 15k. Between my gimpy foot and the fact that Cooper pulled so hard the first 1/2 of the race that he ran out of gas for the second 1/2, Mrs. P finished a good 20 minutes ahead of me.

For the 5k we did on Thanksgiving, we were within a few hundred feet of each other for the entire race.

4 miles in 35 minutes isn't too shabby at all.

At my peak of fitness in the Marines I did 3 Miles in 20:00 flat. There were plenty who did it in 17:00, which was the best you could do "score" wise.

Right now I am doing 3 miles in about 26 minutes, which is still a decent time for a non-athlete.

Pretty much anything under 8-9 mins a mile over 3 or more miles and you're in decent shape.

Prages
12-16-2008, 07:14 PM
I could do a 7 minute mile in high school.

I've smoked and drank a lot since then though.

I finished the 5k in 29:10, and I was shooting for under 30:00, so I'm pretty happy with that.

We're doing an 8k in January. I figure 45:00 is an attainable goal for that one.

I am trainig for track but due to all of our original coaches quiting, we now have a new one...

He has a policy that says "Stretching is not important"...

I injured my calfs and it hurts to walk let alone run...

I am so close to varsity, but with them improving and my trying to run with out pain is hard...but I am slowly getting back into the feel of thing...

(I hope we get to stretch soon...)

Mark Wein
01-24-2009, 03:36 PM
Actually, in the Jeff Galloway book he tells you not to stretch, but to slowly warm up by walking and then running slow before you do your thing. He contends that more injuries happen because runners over stretch...I still stretch my back but I ease into my runs and do pretty well.

White Gold

Maybe that's what he is getting at...

I have been pushing at the beginning...so there may be an accual point to that...

WAIT!

Today on our run, I warmed up and streched and felt great!

Before, I felt like crap due to no warm up and stretching time...

So that proves to me that stretching is good...at least for me...

Walked about 57500 feet. Wow!!

It's pretty cool, hope to try it out for jogging, maybe it works for jogging too.

Is anyone else running in the rain like I am?

My coach is making us run in the rain and doesn't change our workout at all...

I think that is where I got my cold...

Prages and I have a Marathon in April, that I think is going to hurt us both and then a half marathon the next weekend. I think he is not too happy with me, I keep finding him these painful things to do.

I certainly don't look like a natural....

I really hope this hip thing settles down. I bought some new shoes yesterday to better match my gait, so I'm hoping that I start feeling better soon.

Great run for me today!

My first 5 miler! I took it slow to gain the endurance without getting too sore, and it worked marvelously. Spent 50 minutes touring my home town in the early morning light. I plotted a course in Google earth for 5 miles, followed it perfectly, and I'll be goldarned if it didn't come out perfectly 5 miles according to the garmin.

So, I was going to do another 5 miler today, but I felt so good after 5, I decided to go for a whole 10K.

My long run before this weekend was 4.25 miles, so I'm feeling like I'm making some good endurance progress. I'm going to try to make 4 miles my 'every day' run from here on out, and go long on Sundays, the next few at 6 miles until I ratchet it up to 7. I'm thinking I might be ready for a half by October if I can stay healthy.

My time for the 10K this morning was 1:07, but I really didn't push anything. I know that my cardio system is opening up, because I ran at 10:48 pace average, and my heart rate averaged below 160. Yay!

I finished last week with 29.6 miles and a long run of 9 miles on Friday. (It was a horrible 9 miles, too)...

I did 3 miles on Saturday afternoon in the 90 degree heat and high humidity. It was horrible.

My Sunday morning (started at 5:30AM) run was 10k at a nice cool 57 degrees F.

Tomorrow morning, I'm going out for 5 miles, doing my first ever speed workout...

1 mile warmup
3x
800m race pace
400m easy pace
and 1.5 easy miles cool down.

Hoping to shave some off my 5K time with the quality workouts. We'll see.

Paula and I have been meeting in the evening at a little park that's about 10 miles from the house. They have a paved roadway that circles around the park, and if we do the loop, it's a little less than a mile. And it's well lighted.

Our biggest worry is being attacked by a deer or a goose. :o

I'm sure there's got to be something close to your house that's well lighted. I mean, if there's something close to OUR house that's well lighted, there has to be something close to your house, right? :o

What's up with treadmills? Just boring?

Boring, tedious, and no sense of accomplishment.

When I run 10 miles on a trail or on the road, I can look at where I've been and how far I've gone and feel a sense of pride.

If I run 10 miles on the treadmill, I haven't seen a damned thing or gone anywhere at all.

I've been getting back on the overall jogging and physical fitness wagon myself lately. Started running again about 2 months ago, and joined a gym about one month ago. I did a 6 mile run on Monday that went pretty well - weather was about 55 degrees F, cloudy, and misty - pretty much my favorite running weather.

I think in another month or 2 I'm going to get involved in some 5 or 10k races. I expect to be disappointed tho - in my high school track days, I could do a 5:25 mile, and a 5k in about 18:40, but that was a LOT of cigarettes ago. Since I quit smoking last July, it's been amazing how much easier it is to run - I've made the kind of improvements in 2 months that took me 6 months as a smoking runner.

I'm trying to run 4 to 5 days a week after work, but I just don't always have time. I'm also the family cook so if there is some event for my kiddos or myself in the evening (like a 7:00 band rehearsal tonight) it's hard to get home, run, then have dinner ready by 6:15. But I'll try tonight since the weather is supposed to go south quick tomorrow.

My next race is May 22 so I have plenty of time to be more ready than I was for the last one....

Last year, I could barely run 3 miles in a row, and finished on seriously wobbly legs in 34:47 or something like that.
This year, 24:47 would be great, just great. Not sure I'm in good enough shape to hit that, though. My best ever is 25:17 back in October or something.

We've got a 5k on Saturday. I'm shooting for sub 23 on it. We'll see if that happens. I'm sure I've got it in me, but it's going to be a very crowded race (Susan Koman Race For The Cure...they are expecting about 4000 runners and walkers), so I may get slowed down for the first 1/2 mile or so.

The biggest race I'll ever be in is in in two weeks. Grand Rapids River Run 25k. Biggest 25K in the nation. 18,000 runners. My goal for that one is: Don't die. :o

Seriously....

Though that will help you have a faster second and third mile. Just try to be closer to the front of the line. For the race I was in this weekend they asked the walkers to start on the left side of the street and the runners on the right - with signs towards the front suggesting that only people hoping to run quick line up this far up. and we still had a butt load of walkers on the running side of the street at the start.

I'm hoping they'll do it like they did the Charleston Distance Run. They had chalk lines spaced about 20 feet apart from the start line going back to where the runners would line up. They were labelled in minutes starting with 6 and working back to 14 or so. You lined up in the area where you thought your pace would be. It worked pretty well to get the fastest people out in front of the slower people. Plus, the official time was done with a chip, so if it took you 40 seconds to get to the start line, you weren't penalized for it.

Problem with that is, a lot of people ignore the lines. I was clearly standing in the 8:30 pace 'group' for one of the large 5K races I did, and I still had to battle through about 1000 walkers, standing elbow to elbow all across the street for the first 500 meters or so....

In the race I ran Sunday, it took me 1:16 from the starting gun until I hit the starting line. It was timed with a chip, but the first half mile was ridiculous. It was hard to even jog slowly. I was weaving all over the place just trying to make any decent time, and I am far from being a fast runner.
