There are major questions to answer before that happens.

If done right it might open the door to a more profitable company for both.

They just both seem to be in such bad shape right now. If one of them actually had a competitive passenger car business or sold something other than trucks.....

One way to be competitive is to spin it off as a "new company" and devoid it of the burdens that are dragging the rest of the big three into the grave.
People will buy the shit out of a small american 4cyl. that is actually afforable right now.

I don't see how they can walk away from a centuries worth of retirement benefits and other overhead so easily.

it really would take something drastic like that, though...

Me either but if I could figure out how to do it, I'd be a millionaire auto exec and I'd upgrade your sites! ;D

An investment group bought Chrysler a year or so ago...apparently they want to trade it to GM for what GM has left in GMAC since they own 51% of GMAC already...

Oh ok. Jeez, i need to read more on current events.

They all better get on the stick with making super efficient cars or the big three will just sputter and die.

Over on HC someone posted something that made a lot of sense, we have such a hard on about electrics and hybrids, but europe has some amazingly efficient cars, including small displacement diesels. I'd like to see the door open for some of those to come over here. They get about the same mileage as the Prius does now.

I don't see why they can't take the 65mpg diesels they are producing for europe and sell them here. Small conversion to bio-deisel and you got one eco-friendly car that will make your company a energy/enviro hero ???

I think the American public would have a hard time accepting the new diesels because they remember the clunky stinky diesel cars of the 1970s. Apparently the new small diesel engines are pretty clean and different from what we remember...
