Don't force it, for one...thats very damaging.

Are you working any kind of vocalises? If you are then strengthening your head voice or "falsetto" and practicing working through the break between your head and chest voices will have the effect of raising your range somewhat.

I spoke in falsetto all day at work on friday, it's kind of habit forming;)

you have to be reborn in another octave.

Or drink lots of ice water before going on stage !

Your "head voice" is your falsetto and your "chest voice" is where your speaking and normal singing voice resides.

Here are a few videos I've found about your falsetto...this guy has a few lessons but they are pretty short.

Head voice and falsetto are two different things. Head voice is a proper full resonant voice above your normal chest range, whereas falsetto is a thin, airy sound with no real resonance (only using part of the vocal cords).

I'm no singer though. I've got plenty of bad habits, and have never gone to get lessons or anything to sort them out. My range has just naturally expanded (quite a lot) just from trying things outside of my abilities. I'm not forcing anything too hard, but if it's just outside of my range I'll give it a shot. Over time I'll go back to it and find I can actually hit the note. idn_smilie

Things like the "gritty voice" as well, I basically just discovered accidentally. :o

People with lower pitched voices (like myself) are really at more of an advantage. It's more feasible for you to increase your range upwards than it is downwards. So if you naturally have a high pitched voice, there's only so much you're going to be able to do. If you've naturally got a lower pitched voice though, you can potentially add to that and get right up into the whistle register.
