I have a flat tire. It turns out that my car has wheel locks on it and not only did the dealership not provide me with a key for them (since it was pre-owned they didn't have it) but they can't get me a new one. Now it looks like I'll have to have Tire Discounters cut them and install new nuts on it... I'll also probably need a new tire, not just this one repaired and because they're low-profile tires I'm guessing this will be $300-400 bucks, right?

At least.

You should replace tires in pairs at a minimum.

Of course, get all the lug locks removed in one visit. He's got the tools out. It's just a matter of a bay charge at that point. No sense putting it off and paying the charge again when it comes time to deal with the other wheels.

Mojo.

I wouldn't have left the dealership with the car without that key, especially with the weather you guys have.

I had no idea that there were wheel locks on the fucking thing UNTIL YESTERDAY. I've had 'er for about three years and have never had any tire issues, so I was extra pissed off when I started doing research on the little bastards. Looking at prices and this does not make me happy. It's going to be just about what I'm out next month from lost students. :annoyed:

Thats really a drag. I probably would hit the little bugger with a grinder and get it off myself, then get another set.

Most of you guys have grinders and such... I don't. Either way, it won't reduce the cost of the new tires.

I don't know your car make but I'm a little surprised the dealer couldn't come up with a key. Either way, get the locks off. They're only a PIA to the car owner, thieves can get them off usually with a slightly oversized socket and a breaker bar. They beat the socket on the nut (real tight fit) and bust it loose with the bar.

I left my key in one of the wheel locks of my truck one day and drove off. Thankfully I found it in the grass (I was pulling around from the back yard to the front) with a metal detector and a magnet. I took the locks off and threw them away.

The cost of a grinder is likely < the cost of having the shop do it for you.

And then you've got yourself a grinder for all your future grinding needs.

Yep. You can usually find angle grinders at pawn shops for about $10 or so.

Factory or aftermkt?

Have you inquired of your mechanic has or can get a set of master keys?
