how about the shure sm57

it's only about 99 bucks and it can literally be used for any application.
It has been used for vocals, kick drum, snare, bass, trumpet, guitar cab, etc. It's not always the best choice for the instrument but it is an all round winner.

Shure sm57 is great IMO. I also submit the Audix i5 and Sennheiser e609. They both make good supplements and complements to the sm57 depending on your goal.

The SM57 is kind of a no-brainer. It's been a standard for decades in recording studios and if you're going to record guitars or drums I think it should be almost mandatory. I have two of the Sennheiser e609 mics, too that I like a bunch. I use one as part of my live rig for micing my amp onstage since it can hang over the cabinet without a stand...
