PETA are terrorists, but on the flip side SOMETIMES I agree with them. I dont think it is wrong to kill an animal, but sometimes the way animals are treated around the world is so appalling that, well....I cant put it into words.

You can be pro animal rights without using some of the despicable tactics they employ. I think the thing that finally sent me over the edge was when they handed out "unhapppy meals" to a bunch of children. They were happy meal boxes that contained decapitated chickens. I think it may just have been the heads, but I don't remember. I just remember decapitated chickens were involved.

Yeah, I mean, thats messed up. I am not a PEA supporter, btw, I just mean that I get really pissed off at some of the stuff that goes on, too. Now, chickens...um, sorry, chickens are meat. I dont want an animal to suffer, but still, I think chickens were meant to be eaten. Sorry.
But there are some incidents that happen around the world that are well known and it enrages me that it goes on.

I agree. Torture and animal fighting aside, I have read accounts of various slaughterhouses where the workers torment the animals before killing them and it makes my stomach turn. Pigs for instance are INCREDIBLY intelligent animals. I read one account of a pig snuggling up to a worker like a puppy. That worker sliced the end of it's snout off and shoved rock salt into the wound. These things make me sick and I feel working to end such things is worthwhile. I think PETA is in it for the shock factor and the publicity. Have you ever heard of anyone actually changing their habits due to a PETA protest? I haven't.

Because it's fun? I just asked if the OP was gay...
It's what we do at GJ. And for all the ribbing that goes on, it's a great online community.

Please, dont post stuff like this without a warning. I am gonna be thinking about this all day now. I have been trying to lay off pork for a while now for this very reason, pigs are intelligent for sure, and I have been really re-thinking whether I think it is OK to eat them. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that it isnt for me, even if it means giving up pepperoni on my pizza.

I usually agree but with the current GJ temperament, someone is going to take offense to that and it will turn into a 12 page thread of hate.

'S ok. I just really, really REALLY get affected by animal cruelty. I mean, I see chickens and turkeys and fish as one thing, though I do not wish to see them suffer at ALL I dont have an issue with eating them. Cows, OK, cool.
Pigs, though, I have been definitely realizing they can be affectionate, theyre smart, and pretty cool animals. Same reasons I would never eat a dog (dont get me started on dogs, I like dogs more than I like people, I am such a sucker for dogs I cant put it into words) but yet for some reason I always thought it was OK to eat pigs. Now I am just starting to see them for what they are.

I'm fine unless I need to post something there.
I couldn't really asked the Covington question here because of the small sampling of GJers.
Today I wanted to remind the vast number of central Ohio forumites about Experience Columbus days. It's a really great program. Heck! Weebz was going to the Wexner Center this weekend anyway and if I hadn't of said anything, he'd have paid full price. Now he's getting 50% off an activity he was going to do anyway.

I lub piggies. :-[
I'm actually trying to convince the BF to let me have some pet chickens when we move out of the condo. They're pretty cool too.
I don't know if you remember the "My Parents Have a PIG!" thread or not. My dad literally found the thing wandering on the side of the road. (We all thought he was lying because he had wanted a pig for a long time. A couple days later they found a missing pig flyer.)
This pig was adorable and super affectionate. If he didn't already have a happy home, he would have definitely found one with us.

They're not the brightest animals but they're entertaining. They're sassy. ;D
I'm not talking your run of the mill white chickens bred for food either though. They're inbred like a mofo. I'm talking fancy chickens.

This thread kinda got way off topic but going back to the original protesting the bullfighting idea, I feel I've got to chime in on that. I much prefer the Mexican bullfighting over the Spanish. Spanish they kill the bulls. Sure, I know it's tradition yadda yadda. Personally, I just don't like it. I actually like to see the occasional bullfighter get gored and tossed around the ring. Serves him right.
I also stay away from pork for the most part. I prefer beef anyways.

Yeah. I know it's part of their culture but I don't know how I feel about an event dedicated to slaughter.
I still hate PETA though.

Having lived in Spain I have a bit of a different viewpoint. It's more than a 'tradition', it is an integral part of the culture. At least for those 35 to 40 and above. The bulls that fight in the ring are pampered until they tournament time and live a much better and longer life than their beef cattle peers.
The PETA people need to choose their battles a bit more carefully. Bull fighting is small potatoes compared to many other animal 'rights' issues. They could care less about bull fighting bulls to be honest. It was just a way to get their name in the press in a spectacular way. At least when they stood up it was probably spectacular.... ;)
