View Full Version : Good things in store for my truck....

in a couple of months Mrs W will have a new car, I'll inherit the Suburban and I can get to work on my truck. My first bit of business will be pulling the engine to fix a leak, clean and paint the engine and engine compartment and install a Quadrajet carb and intake manifold I've had laying around for a year and now replace the transmission (currently a 2 speed powerglide) with a 350 that my father-in-law bought for his Willeys wagon and now doesn't need since the engine he bought also has one on it.
Then it's replacing the bed wood and doing bodywork.
I'm a little excited :)

Actually, this stuff is only a generation newer than my truck. The 350 transmission came out in 1969 and the carb was available for Chevy trucks 1966 and later (which is the same as the 1965 truck). Plus, I think the original engine is probably in a wrecking yard somewhere. :o
Should I have it finished in Nitro or Poly though? :o

it's like those guys who removed their original PAFs and replaced them with Dimarzios, only years later to buy PAFs to drop back in. yeah, it's "vintage correct" but will never be truly vintage because the solder is new. therefore it's worth $100k less.
you should finish it in whatever paint is on today's GPOTD.

Is Mrs W getting a Hyundai??

In order to make the truck anything nice it's going to be "not stock". SO much has worn out and been replaced that it's not really worth trying to make it happen at this point. Cosmetically it'll be pretty right and authentic but after driving it around on SoCal freeways for a few years in it's current shape it needs a small upgrade.

Yeah....we'll probably get a company lease car of some sort. They pay the insurance and registration, do all of the maintenance and we turn it in every 12-15k miles no questions asked. It'll be a good deal for a year or two and then we'll buy something.

If you're going to get a Hyundai, you really need to get one of these:

Still not my bag...I kind of like the engine to look fairly stock or at least close. I'm not a fan of stuff like this:

The basic Sonata. We're trying to not spend a ton of cash right now but we need a second car that isn't 46 years old :o

Those are nice looking cars. Mrs. W works for Hyundai right? Surprised they don't give her a company car.

I think the next step up the ladder after the job she interviewed for today gets a company car. We get company leases, which is still a pretty sweet deal though.up until a couple of years ago we both drove new cars every year. I had every year Santa Fe from 2003-2009. Then I decided to drive my truck and save the money when we wanted to buy a house in the middle of a recession :)

I used to work for Ford as factory rep to the dealers in my area and I swear if you fixed a paper jam once you got a company car. I used to get a new one every six months or 8000 miles and then they would be auctioned to the dealers to be sold a factory demos.

Hyundai is a little tighter than that. :)

The downside was I didn't get to pick the car. It usually was what ever the new model they were pushing at the time so sometimes you got a black F-150 sometimes you got a "Coral Mist Metalic" (read pink metal flake) Probe.

Best of luck in your resto, Mark. Do what you can with what you got, take your time and you'll appreciate the results. That 3rd gear is gonna be sweet.

Be sure to install a catalytic converter, like that friendly fellow suggested.

Thanks! It'll be a very long process, I'm sure. I just don't have the funds or the timne to bang it out quickly. First thing is pulling the engine/trans though.

Sadly this is still on hold as we are still back ordered on my wifes new car. We might have to change models for her to get anything at this point.
