View Full Version : Hobo Uncle Sam's Guitar Site of the Day!

As long as I can keep it up I'm going to try and find one cool site everyday and post it in here...as big as the internet is I'm sure this will go on for some time....

My inaugural "Site of the day" is a plug for Barrett Tagliarino's "MonsterGuitars.com".

He is the author of one of my all time favorite music theory books for guitar....the "Guitar Fretboard Workbook".

http://www.elderly.com/images/books/117/49-695712.jpg

If you know me from any of the forums or have taken lessons with me you know that I recommend the book incessantly.  Barrett has several instructional books and it looks like a CD coming out soon....

Check him out at http://monsterguitars.com/!

The first few sites are going to be plugs for the books I use on a regular basis with my students, or books that I have found personally useful...

The other "must have" book that I teach out of is "FUNK GUITAR The Essential Guide" by Ross Bolton.

http://www.musicroom.com/images/catalogue/fullsize/HL00695419.jpg

No matter what style of music you play just working through this book will really focus your rhythm guitar mechanics and improve your control of the instrument. Another book I wish I had written.... ;D

I was hoping there would be more stuff on his site:

http://www.rossbolton.com/mainv2.htm

Since it is more of an "artist" site I thought I would link to some of his Youtube videos

Demonstrating the Xotic BB Preamp:

An excerpt from his Funk Guitar instructional video:

Prosound Communications "Reality Web Video"

http://www.prosoundcommunications.com/english/video/realityWeb.gif

http://www.prosoundcommunications.com/english/video/index.html

Its really an ad for their pedals, but there are hundreds of video of high end session and touring guitarists demonstrating how they use the pedals in their rigs. I just like watching the guys play but you also get to see players like Scott Henderson, Andy Timmons and Michael Thompson set up their equipment....kind of a "guilty pleasure" website for me :)

I'm in the middle of this book (with Mark teaching me) and it has really improved my rhythm. I will likely never play funk, but this is still a great book to get.

Top 100 Guitar Sites

Just a list of sites...maybe a starting point if you are looking for something new...

Mark,

Do you realise what you are doing to my day? ;D

I think I spend more time on guitar forums and guitar-related sites each day than I do on anything else (except perhaps sleeping although that could change with this thread)!

Cheers,
Ron

Those 'Musicians Institute' series of books which I find are very good, are getting harder to find as publication dates are from the 90s and early 00s (Funk Guitar is 2001).

I'm hoping it's just a restock problem but two MI books I've placed orders for in the last two weeks from my UK online bookshop have been cancelled with 'this item is no longer available'.

Which books?

I don't remember what last week's was, Mark, but yesterday's was this one:

http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/WEBSITE/WWW/WEBPAGES/showbook.php?id=0793581842

which would've been a bargain at $14-00 including free airmail postage.

I haven't seen that one...They have one by Steve Trovato that is similar...I gotta go teach but I'll see if I can find something comparable to recommend...

It's not in stock at Amazon UK either but it is at Amazon US so it's probably just out of stock.

Don't bother looking for it (or similar) for me thanks Mark, as I have plenty of guitar books and was buying this one on a whim.

I need to actually start USING them and PRACTISING rather than keep buying books (I have over 50 which will become 51 when I buy yours next week :) ).

And now that I've embarrassed myself by giving out that info, I'm turning the computer off so that I can tune the guitar and practise for a while before seeing the doc later on.

Guitar on Wikipedia! Its actually cool to stop and read the history of the instrument...for many of my students this is the first step to clearing up many of their misconceptions about the Guitar:

Tom Hynes! Tom was my guitar teacher in College, and much of how I play and teach the guitar is informed by those few years that I was his student. Those of you who are doing my lessons or working from my book are (in a sense) "second generation" Tom Hynes students...

Here is a great video lesson on constructing chords from your open E, A and C shapes...really good stuff!

http://www.acmuzik.com/httpdocs/media/chord_shapes_hi.mov

The lesson is a sample from his DVD "The Developing Jazz Guitarist"...check it out here!

Would you like to go to a chinese guitar site

You might take your time on this site, has some stuff that I've seen on the old fenders players club, so this site is cool, but I think it stolen a lot (smile) anyway it's a safe site

Some nice stuff on this one, just use a translator on the pages and you'll be happy, of course if you read chinese that is cool too :aok:
look where it says this 大师教吉他 this will give you the lessons

makes ideal homework for your students, comes with audio too

You know it's nice that we can see what is going on throughout the world on the net and although maybe the states seem to have now tamed down a bit, but in china it's still pretty cool, like, "hey, let's steal from the states" ok I don't mean to offend any one but I do like the chinese guitar websites and like sharing them with you. If you use a translator on this site and mess around with it, its pretty cool, well here it is:

This guitarist is based in Tokyo and he has this website. If you like to read about just about anything for guitar and business stop off and take a look.

He's really a pretty good blues guitarist too.

He also can make you private video lessons for 50 bucks which doesn't seem to bad considering the high the cost of living in Tokyo theses days

It's been a year of fun for me to post these post on this sticky and I've tried my best to post sites that would benefit all of us in one way or another. This will be my last post of this year and I wanted this to be the Jem of Jems. What I most like about this site is its simplicity. This is a free guitar pro site in French (maybe) but I'm posting it in English. If you don't have guitar pro, download the free TuxGuitar . It will play all guitar pro files.

I notice recently that Ultimate Guitar cost money these days. Not sure if I read it right. But this site is free :aok:

Here's a site by Carl Brown. He's a player and teacher. On the site there is stuff for free, which is so informative, and there is stuff you pay for at a small monthly fee. Carl, like Mark here is really a nice guy and you'll find him very helpful to answer any of your questions. He is now redoing his site, and has plans to do many upgrades to it, so check it out also in a month or 2.

Hey guys, are you into chicken pick'n

Vinnie, the owner of this site is a cool dude. Not only does he play guitar very well, but he can teach his methods in a simple way that won't get you angry and say "screw this website". I've chatted with him a few times and he really knows his stuff. So take a look at his site. Make sure you bookmark his page once you sign in. He won't spam you with a bunch of bullsh.. Anyway, let me know what you think. He doesn't have a heck of lot to offer, (not yet anyway) but what is there is worth signing up for.

Hi guys. Are you into that country twang stuff, well Vinnie does it, and does it really good. Here is his website. At first you may not want to join, but please sign up. He doesn't hit you at all with any type of spam. He sends out new videos to his members maybe a few times a month, and that is it. I've chatted with Vinnie and he is really a great guy. He'll also email back to you very quickly. He is coming out with a DVD very soon and when I buy it I'll give you guys a review. But since his videos are good, any of you that join may want to buy his new DVD soon since he is having a special on it. http://power-twang.com/
