Well, I was taking pics of my 12-string for a buyer and I sat down and played it for a minute. Big mistake. I still plan on selling it, but I definitely want another 12-string in my arsenal. Now, I've been saying for a long time that I'd like a Ric 360/12, but that's because it's the Beatle 12-string... having never played a Ric I have no idea if that's actually want. For my style an acoustic 12er would probably be the best choice, so I was thinking either Godin (and all associated underlings) or Yamaha and maybe Alvarez?
Or should I try to jump on the electric train?
Nothing even come close to the "Bang for your buck" factor like a Takamine...

Never been crazy about Taks. Almost bought a Garth Brooks sig once and I liked that one, but I ended up with an Alvarez instead.

Well, style-wise, they're pretty "vanilla"... But they are consistently well built and extremely "playable". To each their own though.

acoustic: Seagull
electric: Danelectro
while i would love a Ric 12 string, i just can't justify the price for a guitar i'll play 3 times a year.

I have the Alvarez Fusion series 12 string, and I love it. I play it a bazillion times more than I play my electric 12. Mine cost $700-something, but they slashed the price when they started making them in China. I think they're around $500 now. Alvarez also makes some lower-priced models that look nice, but I can't vouch for their quality.

Eh, I'm not big on crazy tops on acoustic, although I've seen some gorgeous koa tops......
Anyway, I'll check some out next time I'm at the dealer. Never know when an out of the blue instrument turns out to be "right"... that's how I got my 1st Reverend. :o

Yeah, the Ric 12s are pretty fuckin' steep. I thought about the Danos, but do they still make any production 12-strings or do I need to hunt down a used one?

The fusion are their thinner-bodied models right? Do you think you lose much tonally that way? I've loved all of my Alvarez guitars I've own thus far so they're definitely in the running.

i'm really not sure. they did make a DC-12 within the past few years, but i don't know if it's still in production. you should be able to find either one of those, or a 90s RI for around 3 hundo.

I love my Takamine, it's a 1976 FS360 that is an exact copy of a Martin D-18, they even got sued over it. I got it for 30 bucks in a Salvation Army about 15 years ago.

I bought my Takamine EF381C Acoustic Electric 12 string a few years ago used for $400. It has the same CT4B pre-amp as my other Tak. One of the big concerns for me with regards to 12strings is how long do they stay in tune. None of them compete against a 6 string staying in tune but I'm happy with this one. Plus with the turbo tuner for playing live its quick to tune up. I don't play it as much as I'd like as I have a bit of a challenge playing back and fourth between the wide neck on the 12string and the more narrow neck on the 6 string.
This particular model has a spruce top with the sides and back both being maple. I know it lists for about $1700 but I'm sure the street price is much lower.

I can't compare it to any other model - The only other 12 string I ever owned was a Martin and I sold it to pay for a lawyer. The last I saw it the guy was opening up for America and using it on stage
Another option if you already have a 12 string is to set up a 6 string with Nashville tuning.

Yes, it's thin, but I really don't think you do. I think it sounds great. Plus, it's really playable, which isn't always the case with 12-strings.

You can have mine, goddamn thing is un-setup-able. Neck is more twisted than Ted Haggards' porn collection.

I'd love a 12 string, but it's not very high on my list of things to get right now. :o
Definitely not a Takamine though. I can't really explain, but something just rubs me the wrong way soundwise with them.
Probably a Yamaha (my love for Yamahas ain't exactly a secret :D) or a Seagull.
My priorities are on a good LP and at least one kickass 2 channel mic preamp these days though (and that alone will take at least a year to afford) :o

Save up and get a Lunchbox. It's really the only logical thing to do. Go ahead and get the rack, and then start saving for modules. In between you can have Luigi make you some blanks for it. :o

Economically it makes a lot of sense, plus it's a good way to try new pres you might not otherwise try. Lots of builders making 500 modules now with some really cool flavors. I like Purple Audio a lot... Shadow Hills too.

Heard lots of good things about the Purple pres :o
Definitely something worth considering. :)

sounds fantastic, plays great.
price was pretty decent from what I recall (and factoring in my location)
it's really warm, for lack of a better term.

i have never played an electric twelve string that could hold a candle to an acoustic one.
So go for another 12-string acoustic! :D

I need to stop looking at craigslist I just saw three acoustic 12 strings for under $200. One guy wanted to trade a Carlo Robelli for any Harmony guitar and I saw (and passed) on a Silvertone acoustic in the thrift store last night.

I play the six string twin to that guitar. Buying that one would make for quite a nice set...I saw one online for $1200.00 new....

I think the Art and Lutherie 12's are nice. I have a used Yamaha that is really quite nice. I think, especially, if buying used and online, Yamahas are a good bet for consistency. If you like electronics and cutaways, the Luna 12-string Muse is nice and would compliment your 6 string.

The next time I see a sparkle burst Dano electric 12 string I'm buying it.

I have a 70s Yamaha 12 string and a newer Epiphone 12. I just had to have them, and now they both sit in the closet unplayed. One stays tuned for Leo Kottke stuff and the other in standard tuning. Both sound great and play well, but either one would be traded quickly for a nice 000-18 size 6 string.
I'm a guitar junkie. It's just something I live with.

I have the Ric 330-12 in Jet Glo (black). Hate to fuel your fire but you do indeed need to get that 360. I also play acoustic 12 and, well, ever want to play Byrds stuff, Beatles? Not happenin' on an acoustic 12.
