http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Jag-Stang
The Fender Jag-Stang is an electric guitar that is a hybrid of two Fender electric guitars: a Fender Jaguar and a Fender Mustang. Kurt Cobain, of the band Nirvana, suggested his idea for an instrument with combined aspects of both instruments to Fender, resulting in two left-handed prototypes built by former Custom Shop Master Builder Larry L. Brooks, only one of which was ever played by Cobain himself.

It has been said that the instrument needed much tweaking before Cobain would have been satisfied with it, and it was shipped back to Fender for repairs before Cobain brought it with him on the European leg of Nirvana's In Utero tour in 1994, where the guitar was seldom played live. Many believe that Cobain was ultimately unsatisfied with the result and hence never completed revisions for the instrument before his death in April 1994.
Kurt's prototype Jag-Stang had a Fender Texas special pickup in the neck and a DiMarzio H-3 in the bridge. (The H-3 humbucker is not available as an individual product but the closest sounding one is the DiMarzio DP158 Pickup.) The production Jag-Stang includes a "vintage style" single coil pickup and one "special design" humbucker, each with its own toggle switch which a player can use to switch from "on," "off," or "out-of-phase" settings. It employs the Mustang's "Dynamic Vibrato" bridge and like both of its predecessors, it has a 24" short scale neck (an exact replica of Cobain's favorite neck, from a Fender Mustang).

There has been much criticism of the weak pickups and overall lack of craftsmanship of the Jag-Stang.

Originally produced in the fall of 1995, after Kurt Cobain's death, Fender Japan reissued the Jag-Stang two years after its 2001 cancellation due to popular demand. Fender once again discontinued importing the Jag-Stang as of 2005.

Cobain's Sonic Blue Jag-Stang was given to R.E.M.'s Peter Buck by Courtney Love after Cobain died. He can be seen playing it on "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" music video. Mike Mills, also from R.E.M., plays this same guitar in concert during the song "Let Me In", which itself is a tribute to Kurt Cobain. An example of this can be seen on their Road Movie DVD.

Notice I did away with the "I'm sure it's a great guitar" bit.

There's really nothing about this guitar that appeals to me in the slightest.

I'm not complaining.

You do a great job of picking a wide range of instruments for these things.

Unfortunately, you've been on a roll of picking things I don't really care for, but then, I'm starting to realize that I have a pretty narrow field of view when it comes to guitars. :weebz:

Agreed. You can only get excited about seeing so many Teles, Strats, and LPs.

Possibly the worst playing and sounding instrument Fender ever produced, even if you ignore how fucking ugly it is.  I was selling Fender when this thing came out and I made the mistake of selling one to a student (he really wanted it and who am I to tell him his hero "designed" a crap guitar).  Once he became a little more accomplished on the instrument and realized how bad the guitar actually was he never let me forget it.  One reason why we don't sell instruments in my studio.  Unplayable. Blech.  Shit.  messedup0

the only solution is for Mark to go to NAMM and search for good, inexpensive guitars he can be proud to display in his shop.

Actually Tokai was offering to let me sell guitars like that but what they had to offer last year was terrible. And I really do hate selling guitars.

i'm talking about true beginner guitars. nothing over $250. something i can pair with an Orange Crush amp that will beat the pants off of a Squier Strat Pack.

can't sell those in the store. Jay is dedicated to selling direct so he can keep the prices down. also, everybody complains that the tuners suck.

the few I've seen have had fairly crummy hardware.

Well, thats what NAMM is for...

supposedly he's been getting better stuff stock on his guitars with every round. i'll probably never buy one, but at least somebody is trying.

i do like his pickups though.

I have a hard time believing that its impossible to make a decent guitar for low $

i've played $170 New York Pros that beat the pants off of $1000 Fenders. put some GFS pups and hardware in it and play it for 10 years. i've also played some that should be firewood. i'm looking for consistency, which IMO is the only thing that's sorely lacking in the beginner guitar market. (unless you're talking about Hondo, which has always been consistent in its suckiness.)

A truly hideous guitar that was utter junk from the word go.
