;D

The reality is that with the exception of one or two folks we all (in this sub forum at least) are pretty active in both places and are not interested in a "LR vs GJ" style pissing contest. Its just nice to be able to hang with you guys without the drama that is going on over there...

I know that there are a few forums of unhappy ex HC-er's out there but I don't really see this like that...I'm not "railing against the great moderator fascism" or getting banned for creating shitstorms....

Therefore I am a "gruntled current forumite" ;D

And I've noticed he's spent some time at LR lately, too....

I would like to add an amusing tidbit I was actually just discussing with weebz...

I haven't even been over there much but I clicked on the last page of that GJ vs LR thread to see how the shitstorm soufflé was baking up. Bucky actually posted that LR is a better forum because they have hotter chicks than Rada and I. First of all, I'm not sure why that would even be a indication of a better forum and second of all, he's referring to Gracie and Moneypenny from OJ. They're a couple of old, wrinkly, unattractive crackheads. It was so desperate. I'm so glad he stays over in that shithole.

I mean really. Would any of you sign up for LR on the promise of "hot women"?

I see it like this.

HC is a really big dysfunctional family reunion.

This forum is the table in the back where everybody is drinking feverishly trying to forget that they're related to all those other weirdos.

LR is more like the weirdest of the weirdos who are off in their own little world and think that everybody else is the weirdo.

If you are into 'hot women' there are plenty of sites on the net. I enjoy getting a female perspective in online conversations but I could care less about their figures. I signed up at LR when it first went online and quickly lost interest. Knowing ChuckyB was a mod was all I really needed to know...

Its the video for "Online" by Brad Paisley...

Artist: Paisley Brad
Song: Online
Album: 5th Gear

I work down at the Pizza Pit
And I drive an old Hyundai
I still live with my mom and dad
I'm 5 foot 3 and overweight
I'm a scifi fanatic
A mild asthmatic
And I've never been to second base
But there's whole ‘nother me
That you need to see
Go checkout MySpace

'Cause online I'm out in Hollywood
I'm 6 foot 5 and I look damn good
I drive a Maserati
I'm a black-belt in karate
And I love a good glass of wine
It turns girls on that I’m mysterious
I tell them I don't want nothing serious
'Cause even on a slow day
I could have a three way
Chat with two women at one time
I’m so much cooler online
So much cooler online

When I get home I kiss my mom
And she fixes me a snack
And I head down to my basement bedroom
And fire up my mac
In real life the only time I’ve ever even been to L.A
Is when I got the chance with the marching band
To play tuba in the Rose Parade

Online I live in Malibu
I pose for Calvin Klein, I've been in GQ
I'm single and I'm rich
And I've got a set of six pack abs that would blow your mind
It turns girls on that I’m mysterious
I tell them I don't want nothing serious
'Cause even on a slow day
I could have a three way
Chat with two women at one time
I’m so much cooler online
Yeah, I'm cooler online

When you got my kind of stats
It’s hard to get a date
Let alone a real girlfriend
But I grow another foot and I lose a bunch of weight
Every time I login

Online
I’m out in Hollywood
I’m 6 foot 5 and I look damn good
Even on a slow day
I could have a three way
Chat with two women at one time
I’m so much cooler online
Yeah, I’m cooler online
I’m so much cooler online
Yeah, I’m cooler online

Yeah, I’m cooler online

Yeah, I’ll see ya online

Neither, just at GJ in general. Well, the whole situation in general. It's like the clique who in 1st grade were all best friends, then in middle school started to bicker, and by high school wouldnt associate at all with each other.I really am just ... at a loss.

Honestly, I am pretty pissed. I cant go to a public forum to talk to weebz or affy or strings without getting chewed up? You cant be an equal or be respected because youre a woman? Its just insane.

Aw, come on -- Gracie and Moneypenny are alright. But, really, who's going to ANY of these forums for the promise of hot women? I want to talk about gear and music and related stuff, mostly, which is why I signed on to H-C in the first place. Why I like it here, specifically, is that there is a lot less BS
and no trolling. The shit-stirring ruins it for everyone -- just look at what happened to Chihli over there! :P

NO!

And it's strange because you always hear the bitching... "I remember the good old days. GJ used to be so much better. Blah blah blah." I've been there for years (Tude is my second moniker, I wasn't sure if you knew that.) and this is HANDS DOWN the weirdest and most hostile I have seen it.

I actually started at HC on the amp forum, then drifted to the EG, then settled at GJ (though I still frequent EG). GJ has just gotten way beyond the occasionally bitchiness and the trolls who you knew were trolling. A real elitism has developed that has pissed me off. it was definitely not there even a year ago (at least not in the form it exists in today).

it wasn't always like that, there seems to be a steady influx of new personalities that change the over all "flavor" of the the forum.

I can see that...as the people change so does the forum over time.

I think the thing about HCGJ is that it has always been a bit of a wild west and a turf war.

I was talking to The Eristic about this when I briefly was playing music with him and Smurfco, and he gave me some of the history. Years ago, HC used to have only one forum called the "Guitar Forum", and it was a catchall forum for guitarists. Some people were getting peeved about all the off topic nonsense, and so Scott Lehman split it into Electric Guitars and Guitar Jam. EG was strictly on topic, and GJ was for tomfoolery. This is why EG's crap still gets bounced to GJ; apparently, most of the original forumites used both forums, and that's how Joe (The Eristic) has always handled it.

Open Jam came later, and it was more off topic. Political party and some of the others are much newer. Guitar Jam currently sits in a weird spot in the forum, where it was basically created for a bunch of guitarists to engage in internet tomfoolery, but music was supposed to somehow remain the focus. In reality, it has never been heavily moderated. The Eristic is more or less the top guitar mod, and he doesn't care what happens in GJ.

As far back as I can remember*, HCGJ has been a near complete bitchfest... probably because of the historically loose moderation and lack of topical focus. They joke about the Shred vs. Flog wars, but--as stupid as it sounds--that "conflict" really did happen. Wes_Powell and a few others (Roger, Frank Prince, and I can't remember who else) were always engaged in long, spiteful, and tedious arguments with IHATEMUSIC, The Floydian, Martling, and a few others (basically members of Teh Hate Forum) over whether modern music has any merit. The touchstone for the whole debate was Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, and it was both amusing and horrible to see these people go at it. Powell was a geezer with his head stuck in the past, and the Hate Forumites were uneducated boors and lesser players who were too lazy to learn to play proper music. As you may know, Teh Hate Forumites (currently Dew Not Hump, Floydian, Poor Yorick, Frett'n, etc.) established a forum (Ring of Ire), like this one, which was all about launching troll attacks and bitching about what an ass Powell was. Powell was always sending PM's to the Mods and Admin, trying to get them to infiltrate Teh Hate Forum, once even going so far as to create an account and PM the login info to the HC higher ups.

All of this crap was met with an eyeroll behind the scenes. Nonetheless, the forum was dominated with strong minded (and long winded) people who wanted to argue about music. Spin-offs from these discussions included the fighting with Jimmy James about whether music criticism from non-musicians is valid, and all of the forms of argument where someone demands "clips" from a lesser player. Darial/SplawnDarts/Wayne Vinson got the brunt of this treatment. Also, WolfmanJax took quite the beating for buying expensive gear to be a lesser bedroom player. Also, he posted a couple of stupid pictures of himself.

Dick Long is a parody of a lot of that old stuff. And the Steve Lukather/Toto argument was just a retread of tired arguments concerning whether soul > technical prowess, or vice versa. Pretty much everyone knows this, which is why most people participated in those threads with an ironic wink and a nod, and only noobs got seriously worked up.

I think the Weebz era ramped up around the time people were beginning to tire of all the vitriolic shred vs. flog, and some of the Hate Forumites were starting to get banned as Weebz was getting popular. I think people viewed Brian as a nice change of pace, and his demeanor was obviously more laid back and friendly. Plus, he would mix things up between discussing music and chatting about really quirky off topic stuff. People really enjoyed that, and GJ was kind of a happy-go-lucky Weebz forum for a while.

In the meantime, Scott Lehman sold off HC to Musician's Friend, and everything behind the scenes changed. Some of the long-time forumites like Scott Jones drifted away, and there was an influx of new members from whatever forum Phil O'Kief used to moderate. I think the two forums were merged actually. So, there were some turf wars, and lots of general silliness. The focus in HCGJ was less and less on the music, and this seemed to rub people like Derivicus, Roger and (to a lesser extent) FrankPrince the wrong way. Derivicus tried to kind of remake the forum into something about music, and he was resented for it by the newer and younger members. The focus of the argument seemed to change to whether the glory days were gone or just beginning. The Euros began to join in the fray around the same time, and Motorik, Abraision, and Die Roboter (not a Euro) seemed to really enjoy whipping everyone into a lather about ladies fashions, non-guitar music, and the like.

I would say that the nastiness reached its peak when Dew Not Hump, Abrasion, and a few others started bumping heads with Derivicus, and the fighting stopped being about music altogether and really just became a series of personal attacks. Everybody involved was at fault. When Derivicus was ousted as moderator, everything became chaos for a while, and we never really got back to a being a forum about guitar. Everything was too divided into factions, and GJ has mostly been dedicated to snarky in-jokes concerning perceived past wrongs ever since. Admin over there did not come down on Derivicus' side in the fight with Abraision, and he never got over that. Bucky picked a side, and you know how all that turned out.

I have no idea how to bring it back, especially now that HC has changed the forum description to "off topic" (done at HBC's request). Regardless, for the better part of 8 years, GJ has been a bit of an escalating turf war. So, if you think it has just now become too unbearable, the chances are you just didn't notice what was going on there at times. Or you enjoyed the prior drama, but not the current drama (like me).

Anyway, Live Ruckus is just the latest in a series of spin-off forums, including Cyberjammin, Teh Hate Forum, Rig-Talk, etc.

This is all just my perspective, and I can't really swear that the timeline is 100 percent accurate or complete. That said, I think people stay with Guitar Jam for a while because it appeals to them for whatever reason, and then, as the forum devolves further, they move on. It has been this way for a long time as it steadily marches from a guitar forum to an off-topic forum. It was probably doomed to this fate ever since GJ separated from the HC Guitar Forum.

*Basically unknown fact: I originally signed up for HC in either 2000 or 2001 as "TheAwHells" with the purpose of trolling one of the lesser forums... maybe songwriting. I don't recall which, but I hate the songwriting forum to this day.

Wow. Its just amazing to me that an online forum can have a more interesting backstory than the entire Star Wars series of movies....

I really just don't understand why an online forum (which most people participate in while they are supposed to be working) can cause such turmoil. Life is hard enough as it is and for me this is a bit of escapism that happens to dovetail with my business.

I try to get along with everyone (with a few exceptions whom I won't mention and don't interact with) and I don't see why people have to have such a hard time with it.

I for one really appreciate the thumbnail history as it sheds a little perspective on whats going on between the forums. I'm not concerned about guitar content in this particular forum because thats what the rest of the site is about and what everyone is posting here is probably 90% of what drew me to GJ in the first place...I guess the "Weebz" experience ;D

Cheesy's history sounds about right. When I joined in '02, it was toward the end of the flog vs. shred wars. Everything since then seems pretty accurate.

Yes, GJ was pretty much the weebz forum for a while. He really was a great distraction from all of the bitchiness because he didn't really fall squarely with either side...and he really liked to post a lot, which meant that he could single handedly knock a crappy thread off the front page.

Even with the flog/shred wars, the arguments rarely ventured outside of a few threads a day.

Nowadays it's like the arguments cross over into every thread those particular forumites are involved in. It's getting harder and harder to just ignore the flame wars because they can and will pop up in the most unsuspecting threads you can imagine.

Still, I've met a lot of really great people on the forums. Some I've only met online, many I've met in real life. I think that's what keeps me going back there.

Oh, another relatively little known fact.

Coverfest is actually weebz' brainchild.

He's never actually participated in one, but a couple of years ago, he started a thread basically saying "You know what would be fun? Pick a song and have a bunch of people do covers of it and see how differently we can all interpret the same song."

The song was 'Jenny (867-5309)'.

I did a version, and Bernie Frank did a version. Mine was a heavier version of the original, Bernie's was like something from another planet. A little while later, we did "Coverfest II - Weebz Revenge" which was 'Songs about sex'. Two or three people, myself included, submitted stuff.

Now, at that point, there was no organization. We would all just post our songs in the original thread whenever we got around to it. I thought that maybe there'd be more participation if it were organized and if everybody had a deadline and would send their links to one person to post in a Reveal thread. Weebz said it sounded like too much work, so I volunteered. After a few months of 3-5 entries, I started getting 10-15 entries, and eventually, about a year later, when we did "Songs of the 70s" I think I had 31 entries. I passed the torch after about a year and a half. Telecaster911 took over from me for almost a year. After him, Woodstock1969 took over for several months, and now Spacetrucker is at the helm.

So, weebz' influence on the forum is much more far reaching than you might realize. :D

When i first signed up, for at least the first year or two i was just on the EG forum, discussing cheap vs expensive guitars mostly. Thats when i got my Squier 51 and SX tele. hahaha.

Batotman was a real strange fella.

I remember for a long time he was one of the 'I've got two guitars and that's all I'll ever need' guys.

Then one day he snapped and started buying two or three guitars at a time. I think I remember him having over 100 at one time...and he accumulated them all in less than a year. A lot of them were cheapies, but by the end, he was buying multiple Gibson LPs every week. He claimed that he always bought at great prices and that he never lost any money by selling one later, but guarantee he spent close to $100,000 on guitars that year...maybe more.

If I remember right, he was also into body building. Maybe he got on some kind of steroid or growth hormone that scrambled his brain.

I think that one of the main differences between Shred v. Flog and the current state of affairs is that the former debate was between people who all shared an interest in a common topic (music) and just happened to disagree about the appropriate definition of musicianship. They all had a very long attention span, and they didn't try to fight the war on multiple fronts. It would be one very long thread, and there would be lots of name calling, but lots of the opinions were either worth reading, or, at the very least, entertaining.

The current state of affairs is not nearly as topical. It's religion, politics, etc., but the focus seems more personal and much more mean spirited to me. Also, the trolling is more annoying. Instead of picking a fight about Steve Lukather, which at least relates to guitar, someone will just register a few accounts and start a bunch of threads about Live Ruckus for the purpose of encouraging some faction to insult the other, and then the mods are left with the hobson's choice of allowing the burgeoning flame war or taking up a secondary fight about fascist moderation, which loops back into a discussion about how Live Ruckus has better moderators.

It's a mess, and I don't think the forumite popularity contest did anything to help.

There should be a second coming of Weebz. :D

pretty much, although "overworked" is a relative term. I'm overworked compared to what I was used to before, but that just means I'm busy all day now. It looks as though most of my entire department will be dissolved by 2010, but I'm not too worried.

The days have been going pretty fast, actually. I've had some time to post on GJ but I've been avoiding it. Every once in a while I take a break from message boards and actually try and get some work done (you know, helping people out or doing extra work in my free time instead of wasting time on the internet). Interesting thread!AOK I liked CG's retrospective. I had forgotten about some of that.

I'll mention that some of the original Guitar Jammers (before my time) like Bob Ingram, Scott Jones, Wes, etc., got together for a big jam session/hangout once or twice before one of the participants, Moe, passed away, and after that they named the event MoeStock, and convened once a year for a while in his honor. I'm not sure if that is still going on, but I think it was coordinated through people who mostly ended up at CyberJammin'.

I have definitely played the role of shit-stirrer on GJ more than once, so I'll formally apologise if I've hacked on anyone here and hope nobody is holding a grudge.

I admit that I enjoy the knock-down drag-out arguments at GJ, but have seen it get ridiculous, i.e. the Powell/Hate Forum wars, reporting people to the mods, threatening legal action, knee-jerk Luke bashing, etc.

Anyway, this forum looks like fun. Nice to see you all. wave0

Wow, why didn't I notice this thread when I first joined? Anyway, great history on GJ, Grits. A couple of revelations, even though I was around for most of it.

Anyone unfamiliar with Yngtchie? I don't think I've done any introduction speeches since I posted my "Hi, I'm new here" thread back in 2003 on Guitar Jam, so I'll just do one now.

I'm Yngtchie. I've been an HC forumite since 2003, and I've been playing guitar since 2000/2001-ish. I started out as a post whore, eventually arriving at 19000 posts when the Great Purge happened, and I never bothered getting my posts back. I don't have any strong stances, so I'm pretty sure I'm one of the more anonymous HC forumites. Maybe I should've acquired a personality...?

Oh well, I'm a good guy, although I tend to get annoyed at some of the things people discuss. I got in a fight with some respected MAPZ forumites right after I joined, and I haven't really felt comfortable with that part of the forum since then. I enjoy good arguments, and I'm not opposed to stirring shit just for the sake of some healthy flame wars.

As for forumites I'm good pals with, most of them don't really post much anymore. WulfmanJax quit HC, and Rustie lost interest in forums altogether. He's just too level-headed to get involved in any of the big shit storms. I never got to know weebz, to be honest, but he seems like a friendly guy. Ditto with Tude, don't think I've ever discussed things with her. I like Wein, he's one of the few people who've adapted remarkably well to the quirky forum that is Guitar Jam, and he seems like an all-around good guy who's not afraid to speak his mind when the situation calls for it. Soylent Wein is my kinda people.

I am one of the original GJ members. I was under a different name then. It was in the mid-late 90's. I came across it looking for examples of effects pedals, and it popped up in a search. I have been a good dozen alts since, but decided to stick with affy this last time.

I remember the original forum was not this vbulletin style. It was like:

- I just tried out a new Les Paul
--(Response) I just tried out a new Les Paul
---(Response) (Response) I just tried out a new Les Paul

I hated that part of it.

I was pretty new to the internet and did not know there was a name for what I enjoyed doing; messing with people. Someone called me a troll. I didn't know what that was. Some of you would not like me very much if you connected me to those old alts. I took pleasure in being two guys at the same time on the forum. Sometimes I would argue with myself. You couldn't see the IP numbers back then. I try to be the good guy now. I guess I grew up some.

I remember I had old dial-up Prodigy internet. It would kick me off the forum every 20 minutes.

I found the guitar forum kinda boring back then. It was over-serious sometimes. My memories are of "professionals" talking down to lesser players. That always got my back up. That is why I enjoyed the trolling.

A couple of years ago, I came on as Jeff Healey. It was for nothing but trolling. A well-liked, depressed English forumite (guess who) posted a parody thread of Steve Vai playing a little girl like a guitar (he photoshopped a pic). I thought it was funny, but couldn't pass up a troll. When he shopped the pic, he made the mistake of placing Vai's hand in a precarious place on the little girl. So, I accused him of some distastefull things. The whole forum came down on me. Good times. Good times.

Also, using that alt, I trolled xqqsmytude. I don't know if she even remembers. GJ has always been a male-dominated forum, and I liked it that a fiesty woman was on the scene. I like 'tude. As affy, I knew where she worked, odd things about her, etc. because of conversations with weebz. I spooked her a little. She wrote things like: STAY OUT OF MY MYSPACE!!!! hehe I didn't even realize she had a myspace, so I checked it out. She had too much info about herself on there, along with the link to her journal.....a big no-no. My wife was in on that one. I ended up confessing and apologizing. 'Tude would love my wife. A kindred spirit. Maybe that is why I like her. Whether it is sub-conscience or not, I don't think 'tude has liked me since then. She may not remember why. I have regretted it many times, and have never trolled a singular person since. I have never told her, but I use that story as a teaching tool to my students...."Are you safe? You leave a trail behind you on the internet."

All in all, I have contributed absolutely nothing to GJ, really. I hope to do better in the future. I am talking more gear-related topics, but still like the silliness.:weebz:

Its funny that there is so much history beneath the surface at HC.

As someone who has only been a forum patron for a little over 2 years (which makes my total post count across this place and HC REALLY embarrassing) I see the interaction between people but never had a sense of the motivation that drives the rivalries and friendships between the older members....

Wilmer X

Seems that this is a place where many tell their HC-story? Well, I´m totally unknown at HC. even if I have been posting there since early 2004. My post count was less than 1 post per day; I´m more into playing guitars.

However, I started in the HC amp forum cause I needed some help with tubes for my amp. The info I got from the tube gurus, KC NOS Tubes and others who were there at the time, was top notch. Actually; almost everything I know about tubes today comes from amps forum. I also needed some info on guitar pickups and went to EG, and they were also very helpful. I started to post in GJ to discuss music and not only gear, but their tastes were too different from mine. I started playing avantgarde jazz in the early 70s, so I never became a part of GJ:s rock community. Perhaps I was not so popular for one reason: I always thought I was much older than all at GJ so I always spoke to them as an older guy speak to adolescents. Recently I have seen pics of people at GJ and they´re all almost in my age!

An evening I got bored and said goodbye to GJ, which started a shitstorm. I thought it was fun and answered, started with trolling and was soon permanently banned. I then went to LR, which was quite fun for a while. But since I visit guitar forums to discuss music and gear related things, there´s no point being on a forum full of poo threads and OJ nonsense, so now I´m here. Well, that´s my story. :)

Affy, I remember the old forum with the (response) knowing I could never get into that at all.

Lurked once in a while, then one day, whoaaa, look at this. Like a real forum. Kept lurking, honestly looked mostly at gear reviews and things more than the forum.

Then it happened. I was laying tile in the sunroom that I was building and was waiting for the cement to stiffen and went into the forums. Lo n behold, there was a "the telecaster is the Model T of guitars" thread by Splawndarts (Wayne Vinson). So what the hell, I signed up, made my moniker telecaster911 in support of the venerable tele and started posting in that thread. It's been downhill ever since. That was in November of 2006 that I signed up. Recorded my first coverfest the next month, and the rest is history.

Work finally blocked HC. I signed up at LR which initially was kinda GJish but not the same. Now it's just off the charts for me.

I signed up pretty early at MWGL, probably for the first backing track contest, (I think). The way that things flow and the folks that are here is a perfect fit for me. Work ended up blocking it, but I can still keep up with a little time in the evening.

I dont even remember how I ended up at HC. Well, I used to use the tab archive on occasion and read the gear reviews way before I wandered into the forums. When I did make it to the forums I hung out in EG, then moved onto OJ before that just got too raunchy, then back to EG, then one day I decided I was going to invade GJ. I dont bring anything to the table except a lot of unhealthy food.

I signed up on HC in 1999, but was never really active till about 2001. Before that I mostly lurked.

I've been r0g3r the whole time I've been on there.

I think the history provided by Cheese Grits seems pretty on, except maybe that he didn't quite capture the way the "flog" people HATED any kind of display of musicianship in music period. That's what really drug me into that whole thing. I was never the guy sticking up for Toto, because I don't care for Steve Lukather's playing or personality and even less for his original music.

Wes_Powell was also a fundamentalist, anti-science, creationsist christian liberal who was also a firm believer in re-incarnation. A real strange mish-mash of crazy beliefs that he would stand firm on and debate you to the death. Though I agreed with some of his points about music, I couldn't get down with using Toto as an example of good music, or with his debating methods, which were the same dishonest methods whether he was debating shred/vs flog or creationism vs science.

Derivicus, I thought got a lot more flak than he deserved, even though I can understand how the views he expresses can be taken for small minded bigotry. His moderation, as far as I was personally concerned was fine. Maybe if I'd been in someone else's shoes I'd have seen it differently. His only problem as a moderator was the fact that his views are so fringe and controversial, that it was hard for him to avoid conflict.

I think HackedbyChinese and Strings74 have done more to change the forum in a bad way than anyone else ever, except maybe Silver, who was another kind of overly gungho moderator back in the day. Many people I considered fixtures there did leave because of them. I refuse to post there as long as Strings is a mod period. I read a thread yesterday linked from here where he was going off about the presidential debates....yet he was deleting political threads by guys like myself and Jimmy James only shortly before that. A mod getting into the sideways insult game of political mud-slinging is not much different from what I said was derivicus' downfall. He's expressing controversial views as a moderator, and drawing tons of heat - and that's even disregarding his clearly uneven treatment of just about everyone he comes into contact with. If he had any respect for the place, he'd step down after running off guys like me who were fixtures there long before anyone ever heard of him.

Anyhow, I like forums like this one much better. I can see people I know from there, and yet the vibe is so much cooler. I don't even know exactly why, but I suspect it's to do with the way places are run and the attitudes of the people that run them. The way HC is run generates the poo flinging that goes on over there so regularly....like the epic longest gig report in history that went down recently, though that WAS gold.

I'm glad you like the place. Its almost like a fresh start for everyone who knew each other from GJ but had enough of the place for whatever reason. Most folks wander back to GJ eventually but still post here and I really dig it...

I think everyone takes to heart the idea that this is a mellow "drama-free" hang biggrin

Yeah, there's more behind me and strings' problem than just his election behavior. He came over to liveruckus and shared how he really feels about me.....basically he thinks I'm a mental case and much worse, so I don't think I'd ever feel good posting there (I probably think less of him than he does of me for the record).

But yeah, I'm more into internet peace than internet wars these days, which is why I had even avoided liveruckus for a long time as well. There are a few volitile personalities there who I don't gel with very well. Though I love Bucky and think he has a novel idea of how to run a forum.

I get along with everyone pretty much although I loved taking the occasional stab at Wayne Vinson since he made an online career out of inciting mayhem.

I like Bucky and he's graciously offered to lend a hand several times if I needed help with the forum but I don't enjoy LR as a forum between my bad experience with one forumite and I'm just not on the same page with most of the people over there in terms of interests. Theres some really nice people there but there seem to be some pretty bitter and angry folks, too.

Thats what is great about the internet forum world, though....you can find a place that fits you and hang out there....:-)

I think it's funny watching people have pissing contests about how long they've been around HC / GJ whatever. It gives me a strange sense of Esteem boost knowing some folks' Crystal Palace is their post count..

They talk about being around since 1999 / 2001 like it's some badge of honor. "I was around since "Mrs.Willie-T" was "Willies-GirlFriend" or Whatever...

Oh, the days gone by.

If I had put the time into Guitar that I put into geekdom we'd be having a very different conversation right now.

You know, to be honest, I think the odds of any forum turning into a shithole increase rapidly as the member count goes up. You can't all be on the same page. This place is still new, and it doesn't all that many active members compared to HC, but who knows what it will be like 5 years from now?

I like HC, but I do think anyone who wants to enjoy being there needs to just avoid certain threads and forumites (and what/who those are, is up to you personally).

I think this is correct on both counts. There are a lot of threads and topics I avoid posting in or even reading on HC, because it seems if you don't agree with the consensus on some things, your opinion is not wanted and usually a shitstorm will ensue. I don't go to forums to argue with people, so it's better to just ignore some things and some people.

Seems a whole lot cooler here for sure.

Sadly I think this is very true and something that I've felt would be the case even from the very beginning. I hope it will retain some of the character that it has now...I really enjoy the forum and all of the people on it but even now its starting to get to the point where I can't really participate in all of the threads like I used to (which is a good thing on most levels, I guess).

The more personalities that you add the greater the probability that folks won't get along or will get more "cliquish". All I can do is make an effort to keep things for spiraling out of control and discourage bad behavior.

For all the carnage we see on places like HC and TGP there are forums like dolphinstreets www.thefret.net (http://www.thefret.net) and www.TDPRI.com that seem to have a friendlier overall tone, though....I think theres hope for us!biggrin

Not entirely true. I signed up in 1999 and back then you had Guitar Jam, Open Jam, Bass Jam and what eventually became Cyberjammin and it was all unmoderated for years.

Teh Hate Forumites (currently Dew Not Hump, Floydian, Poor Yorick, Frett'n, etc.) established a forum (Ring of Ire), like this one, which was all about launching troll attacks and bitching about what an ass Powell was. Powell was always sending PM's to the Mods and Admin, trying to get them to infiltrate Teh Hate Forum, once even going so far as to create an account and PM the login info to the HC higher ups.

Not true, there was no daily meetings on how to "troll" HC and I don't think the name wes_powell has come up in years. Believe or not that forum is one of most drama free forums out there. It's basically a dozen like minded dorks shooting the shit from time to time. The fact that wes "reported" a completely non-related forum to you guys is hilarious.

For some reason I'm the main guy in that whole thing. Did I participate in calling dervicus out on his incredibly ignorant/aggro/offensive posts? Totally, but there were about 75 guys who saw him for what he was and called him out every single day.

Posting lessons is against the laws there?

I haven't been there in years.

I think the thing about GJ being off topic is that for those of us that have been there for a long time there is only "what kind of pick, cable, strap, strings do you use" discussions a guy can have.

It's taken them 18 months to realize that the links go to my website which had google advertising and me selling a book. Never mind that I've been providing weekly 8-10 minute original content video guitar lessons complete with printable notation for free to their forum.

It was mentioned that they are considering having a "commercial forum" and if I would like to pay they would keep my posts in the new forum.

I didn't mean any offense, and I should have probably couched the bit about Ring of Ire in terms of how Powell viewed it, as opposed to what it really is. You guys do crap on GJ forumites there though. But whatever, it's not like GJ doesn't have more than its fair share of obnoxious personalities who deserve the hate. I personally like all you guys.

If asked, I probably would have placed Motorik and Abraision higher in the pecking order of people who were fighting with Derivicus than you. You keep promoting yourself as a "douchebag" who fought the internet war though, and so I think it sticks out in people's minds... even if it is pretty clear that you are saying a lot of the stuff ironically.

Powell really did try to make a big deal out of Ring of Ire though, and that is a sad tale of obsession.

You guys can hash it out somewhere else if you are so inclined but please don't drag this place into it...one of the reasons why the regulars hang out here is because we don't have any of the "brown squalls" that are so prevalent in the other forums. I like it that way, too....:-)

I loved the original one when I was a kid and thought that the new one would be lame. I think its the best thing on television at the moment. You really have to watch the whole thing from the beginning, though. It has the sci-fi thing but there is enough other stuff going on that even my wife loves it...really good stories. It will be over in about 10 episodes, though....:(

Mrs.P

Sometimes it gets a little too soap opera-ish, but the story lines are pretty cool. I just hate all of the cliff hanger stuff that has been thrown into series television today. I like nice tidy story lines with a beginning a middle and an end. You can have things that continue, but still tell a story in that hour that I give up for you every week.

That's why I can't stand "Lost", it just has way too much crap going on and absolutely no continuation and way too much soap opera for me.

I like shows that don't try to hit my feelings and just blow stuff up and drive really fast and solve stuff all within an hour.

I have ADD when it comes to TV. When Prages isn't sitting with me, I will fast forward through all the taky talky mushy crap and just wait for things to blow up, on just about everything I watch. I can watch a whole show in about 5 minutes - 10 minutes if it blows a lot of stuff up.

Sooo... my apologies for bumping this, but I just wanted to mention that I've been doing some research in the thread jail at the other place. I wasn't sure what would be preserved after the transition to 2.0, and I thought we might need some specifics to flesh out our history. So, I printed several threads to pdf files, including a lot of the war against music, some of the early Lukather trolling, a good bit of the history of what got D-Man canned, the Law of Man stuff, and the Victorian Dandy thread. Now I'm not sure what to do with it.

I think that was my first HC related death threat. :cheese:

I've come a long way baby!

I'm in the same boat as this guy. I'm about to buy a Mac G3 with 396MB of built in memory and about 14 gigabytes of Hard drive space. The machine has Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator. Will I be able to run the Pro Tools Demo with it? How difficult is ProTools to operate? For beat should I stick with my drum machine, its a Boss DR660, or should I get something like Fruity Loops or Reason? What are the advantages of sound cards versus adaptors for the mic input. Can I record into my computer with a microphone? I have an ART Tube Pac mic preamp and several SM57 type mics. Ideally, I 'd like to be able to record full songs, not just tracks to solo over. Any help would be appreciated.

Sooo... my apologies for bumping this, but I just wanted to mention that I've been doing some research in the thread jail at the other place.

Someone should plumb the GJ archives for other significant threads. If you want to send me a link, I'll print them as pdf files. Who knows what will actually transfer to the new forums. ???

Whatever you feel like saving and can turn into PDF's send to me and I can host an archive over here. Maybe you could take requests for thread rescues before oblivion...

That's too long to save. Seriously. I have my options set to 100 poasts per page, and the thread is 23 pages long.

There was a guy (maybe this was EG also) who was like the best troll ever. He just appeared once in awhile and start a thread like bending up to go sharp and down to go flat, and people bought every time. It was great. :D

I'm trying to decide about that. I mean, the threads have HC trademarks all over them, and they were jailed (at least some of them) for a reason. So, I don't want to cause any conflict (especially for you) by having them posted over here. You know what I'm saying?

At least two or three years ago, not sure what happened to it.

The dandy thread happened in such close proximity to the thread where D woke up with a 19-year-old in his bed who had wet herself. When the timeline is complete, I think it might be pretty shocking how much really bizarre stuff we have been witness to or participated in. :D

The reality is that with the exception of one or two folks we all (in this sub forum at least) are pretty active in both places and are not interested in a "LR vs GJ" style pissing contest. Its just nice to be able to hang with you guys without the drama that is going on over there...

"You keep it up and you'll be regulated to a forum that a disgruntled ex GJ forumite has created..."

I like how it's always the idiots who's mastery of the English vocabulary is slim-at-best who feel the need to tell others what to do. I think he meant to say "relegated". LOL.

Was that the one where he posted about how some chick texted him for a "booty call" and then he was like "she's got big tits and I'm on the way over to bang her right now" and then when guys started calling her a whore or whatever he got all offended and was like "she's a classy lady, you guys are assholes."

Ah, the good old days.

LOL, that was a great thread...

Looking back a lot of those d-man fight threads were pretty absurd. The one's about shooting peoples pets, how dog fighting is no different than horseracing, the bitter debate about how social security and unemployent benefits were not social services, the difference between socialism and communism and on and on and on.

It was a bizzare period in the history of the internets.

he also spouts complete gibberish sometimes. I think we need a "talk like tompetty" contest here.
