I might take a shot at that one....
I hear a Funkadelic, Hendrix inspired, OD drenched lead line on top of that.....
Or something Prince-ish....
Too bad I can't pull either of those off.... :quag:

So what modes would you use for that track F# mixolydian?
Mark Wein
12-12-2008, 02:50 PM
You could use F# Mixolydian, F# Blues, F# Minor Pentatonic, F# Major Pentatonic and even try F# Dorian.
You can also trying to superimpose the following arpeggios over the F#7 chord:
A#m7b5 ( A# C# E G ) - Bbm7b5 would be easier to think but A# is actually the 3rd in F# so it keeps it all straight....
C#m9 (C# E G# B D#)
E major 7 (E G# B D#)

So what modes would you use for that track F# mixolydian?
I just screw around on the guitar until I find a scale I like. My 'comfort zone' is usually the minor pentatonic scale though....
Here is what great funk solos can be....

Not really any rules for funk, but I wasn't really doing much more than yammering over the track to get a feel for what would work....theres quite a bit of crap in that take as I did a little trial and error...

biggrin
Its all in getting the "flavor" of each mode out of those collections of notes. F# Phrygian Dominant is just the 5th mode of B Harmonic Minor. If I just played it as B Harmonic Minor and played my Yngwie licks that all resolve to notes in B nothing would have made much sense... smi
I've known the scale was there but I've never really bothered to use it...I might actually start using it more often now that I've given it a spin...

Here's what I was running into.
Laptop has Vista Home Premium 64. Also has a card reader, 4 USB 2.0 ports, a Firewire port and an expansion slot.
I installed an ESATA expansion card for my external harddrive. I had to get the external hard drive because the computer's internal one is 5400 RPM and was too slow to record 10+ tracks of audio for an hour +. So, I got a 7200 RPM 1.5 TB drive and hooked it up via ESATA. I've got two Firepods run in series into the Firewire port. I also had my wireless internet card (USB) plugged in and had a USB flash drive plugged in.
With everything plugged in, the computer wouldn't recognize the Firepods. Once I unplugged everything except the Firepods and the ESATA card, it works fine. idn_smilie

Okay, got the backing track downloaded and will give this a take in the morning (Mrs. P has to be AT WORK at 6 am, so I have plenty of time in the morning after she leaves).

Here is something a little different...someone asked me about playing F# Phrygian Dominant (or B Harmonic Minor) over this.
Its not something I do very often but I thought I would do a short sample of the sound...i kind of like it smi

I dug that quite a bit. AOK

I'm going to work on the sound a little bit. I've never really used the scale and it was pretty fun to play....

It was an over the top flange setting in a Cubase plugin. I only put it in there because I hit a really bum note and wanted to detract attention from it with the use of a cool effect. :weebz:
I didn't use any fuzz. That's my US Masters straight into my Classic 30. The clean part is the neck/middle on the clean channel, the dirty part is the OD channel with the gain about 2/3 of the way up using the bridge pickup (Dimarzio Tone Zone). Then I put on a little delay and reverb using plugins.
Glad you liked it. AOK

I didn't really do anything different than normal. Maybe I had the mic a little too hot and clipped the mic pre a little or something, though I don't think so.

In no particular order:
Mark's (I think) Phrygiandom take: Cool. Never would have occurred to me to use most of those notes, but they seem to work somehow.
Thredlok's first take: I like the theme you're working with. Sounds good. Pretty cool tone too.
Thredlok's second take: 20% less clams indeed. I see that you kept with the same theme and just refined the playing in this one. Again, very nice.
Tele911: I like it. Very nice note selection, and really nice tone to boot. This is probably the smoothest take I've heard yet. AOK
RonK: Some really good stuff going on here. Kind of restrained sounding. Nice space, it lets you get over what just happened before moving on to the next phrase.

Rocklegend: First take: A little sloppy, yeah, but some good ideas going on. With a little refining this one could be right up there, I think.
Rocklegend: Take 2: This one is less sloppy. Still a few little timing issues, but overall, a really good take.

I'm going to try to play around with this one. Not listening to everyone else's take yet, or I'm sure I'll be intimidated and might not want to try it. I'll see what I can come up with for a few days, then maybe see if I can record something worth saving.

I'm really enjoying playing along with this, might be a few more days before I get a chance to do any recording. Really looking forward to hearing everyone's take on it, but I'm going to wait until after I've tried to do something with it. Hopefully might get a day off the first part of next week, and get a chance to hook everything up & try recording something.

Haven't forgotten this, my "few more days" has turned into a couple of months, but still would like to give it a try, and Chihli's backing track as well. Just can't seem to come up with anything I think is worth keeping, especially after hearing what the rest of you guys did. Have a couple days off this weekend, finally, and will do my best to try again and see if I have any better luck.

Well, I got a take on this done today, but haven't been able to get it rendered to MP3. I had no problems before, but reinstalled Reaper today, and its telling me that my lame_enc.dll is not a valid Window image. Not sure what that means, and have messed with it today until I'm getting a headache and am giving up. May try again tomorrow.
If I can get it converted to MP3, I'll post it here ASAP. Not that it's very good, but I figured it's better to do something than do nothing, I seem to learn a little something every time, although I have a long way to go.

Well here's what I got yesterday. Finally figured out how to convert it with Itunes, as the rendering thing has me stumped for now.
Pretty much just a one shot deal, as I'm not able to really edit much yet. There are a few bad notes in there, but overall it's one of the better takes on it I've done I guess. Pretty pedestrian sounding, I think, like pretty much everything I seem to play, but I like playing over this, so may try and come up with some new ideas and try again later on.

Thanks to you too, Mark. Seems like pretty much anything sounds OK over that track. The medium tempo and lack of chord changes make it pretty much right up my alley (kind of hard to screw up too much!).
Tonight I may try to go back and listen to what the rest of you guys did, and maybe if I have time try again this weekend and see what happens. Like I said, if nothing else, it's a lot of fun to play along to!
